Thanks for your feedback, guys.
In another report my closing thoughts were more or less that as CBT has a long tradition of hex based gameplay, Alpha Strike is taking some time to gain a foothold/following.
Many of the reports being posted for it simply don't utilize sufficient terrain, I think.
This might be true of any system, but while in games like Warhammer for example units need avenues to maneuver, in 40k terrain provides cover but you want your units to be able to see and shoot one another, in a lot of WWII or GZG/Gruntz/historical games the ranges are scaled down for playability…in a 1/300 scale game such as this, the average shot is taken at 6-24", with 3' not being out of the question – it's a very viable proposition with the right modifiers (target in the open which hasn't moved, shooter overheating for extra damage – say a base 4+4 for range is an 8 for a base damage of say 3+2 for overheating that's a shot I'd take hands down – even with cover you're looking at a 10…why not take it, fall back for a turn to drop heat and carry on. What you got to lose, really?)
So either one plays with a lot of terrain like we do, or more emphasis needs to be placed on combined arms by introducing more BattleArmour, armored units, conventional and heavy infantry – in which case 'Mechs take a secondary role in the lists (perhaps a percentile cap could be implemented if both players/tournament organizers agree IF terrain is scarce)
Without terrain Alpha Strike would be boring as hell – that and of course the fact it abstracts so many aspects of damage, facing, heat management etc…..that are so central and dear to Classic BattleTech fans might be another reason it's taking some time for the game to gain a foothold as a valid system in its own right.
Whatever the reason, my two hundredths of a dollar are anyone even vaguely interested in this new take on the BattleTech franchise should seriously consider giving this game system a fair shot with at least five or so games under their belt, two or three lances aside, before passing comment on it.
I hope you won't be disappointed!
It's certainly been my experience.
Glad you enjoyed it – back to basing GW Epic Whirlwinds for next weekend's game!
