This is the only site I go to whose message boards go down nightly. Is it really necessary? They go dark around midnight my time, which is the time of night I'm most likely to pop by. |

It's an old system. The database needs to be re-indexed every night. |

Breakfast time for me too, has been this way ever since it was set up. Can't recall if it is database or content indexing, but indexing it is. You will find that other websites you visit are going down for maintenance, but you don't notice because the front ends are clustered and their back ends don't need offline indexing. We do rolling restarts on some of our systems to bring in patches etc with thousands of authenticated user sessions, and the users never notice (unless something goes horribly wrong). |

Apparently it is necessary. It might not be once the fabled TMP 4.0 is finally done some day. But I wouldn't hold my breath… |

Actyally there are a few here who I hope would "hold theie breath" till TMP 4.0 comes out. |

For me its usually between 12am to 2am. So I am usually asleep when it happens. |

Nightly maintenance is like being under siege. Dear Editor needs to constantly repair the damage to the walls caused by the sappers and miners from Frothers. Since it is usually between 3 and 4 AM for me and is noiseless I am not bothered. Except when he blows up a counter mine of course. |

"indexing it is." I did attempt to explain the idea of amortised indexing costs at one point, but people weren't interested. "their back ends don't need offline indexing." Or they have a process in place for indexing while working and transitioning indexes after completion… |
