I don't have any ACW figures, but I am tempted to start by the V&B rules.

I know there is no ‘Correct' basing, but as a guide how do you base 15mm figures foe ACW V&B ?

Would it look better if I used full sized bases and 6mm figures ? Again, how do you base at this scale ?

Links to photos would be welcome.

TIA

Pete

I've been looking at V&B as well, though for Napoleonics rather than ACW.

Basing is clearly a matter of taste and preference, and if you are not working within a club context, go with what you like. I have perused a number of V&B based blogs. A lot of people scale down the bases and go with fewer figures, but in my opinion that short changes the visual appeal of these grand tactical rules. I also prefer the massed effect of small scale figures, even though I am normally a 28mm gamer. I'm planning to go with 10mm figures, 40-50 infantry per base (or 16 cav per base).

If going with 15mm figures, I would go with 3" bases and as much lead as you can cram on!

All my humble opinion, of course!

Basing is whatever is pleasing to your eye. I use full size bases for all figure scales.

For 15s I used 2 or 3 lines of 9-12 figs per line. You can throw a couple of skirmish figs on the front of the stand if you want to.

For 6s I planned 3 or 4 units of 16 figs each, which can be arranged as one line supported by two or three columns, three or four lines, etc. At this scale you can do a little bit with displaying various formations. Again, you can throw some skirmishers on the front of the stand.

For the smaller scales, you can throw on a mounted brigadier here and there if you want to.

For 15's, I use 60mm square bases with 14 figures in a 2 rank line (2 ranks of 7). For measurement conversion, double all distances and call them centimeters (example: 16" move becomes a 32cm move). Gives about a 22% reduction in playing surface.

Agree with the above – as long as both sides have the same sized bases, ideally crammed with figs, it will work out fine

I use 6mm but that's just me – 15s would look fine as well

My 15mm ACW generally have between 15-20 figures per 3" base, often with some decorative feature (stone wall, rail fence, haystack, etc) in the corner on on one side. For 25's I use 7-12 figures per 3" base. My colonials are on the linear bases, but usually with only 3-4 figures to represent the generally looser formations.

I've used 2/3 bases with 6 mm figures. You can get a lot on that size stand.

I use 2"x2" stands (2/3) with 18-21 figs. Two lines of infantry with some skirmishers out front. I use 10mm.

Thanks,

John
