I have been asked the question a few times and thought it was time to start planning. Some of you may have seen my SYW range of 20mm figures, so will know they do not match plastics, problem I find with doing them in metal is they just look too skinny and lanky, if they have to stand next to plastic and of course have to thicken things like the musket out so it doesn't snap if you stare at it. So my first question would you be happy with the fact they would be 20mm not 25mm like most plastics, so in affect a stand alone range. In fact is there room for another range of ACW even with all the advantages of 20mm.
Appreciate your help guys.

I would be very careful about putting money into a range that would not match with any other figures already out there. It may be dangerous to make this niche market even smaller than it already is. How do your figures compare to other 20mm metals, such as Newline Design?

I love the SYW figures btw! thumbs up

I agree. The only way I would create a new, incompatible range would be if I were CERTAIN I could complete the range entirely. No one will want to get on board only to have the range never get finished. But if you could get one done in its entirety, then more power to you.

What Texas Jack said.

Speaking as someone with ACW armies in 6mm,15mm, 28mm and 54mm I would not be inclined to start again in another scale – and there is an awfully lot of competition out there for ACW figs so despite the proven elegance of your minis I would be cautious about a new 20mm ACW line

Instead of a new size, maybe look into the western theatre of the ACW. I've seen the separate head kits for alt troops in 28mm( I will admit that ethnicity is redundant in 15mm and smaller)
I would gladly purchase Native American heads/ complete troops for Western Theatre or even Company K of the 2nd Michigan Sharpshooters. It'd be fun to have the Union Highlander regt in kilts as well. Although they were used for dog and pony shows and did not fight in the kilts, it would be a nice, fun unit to have.
At 28mm if they were a little off in stature or equipment to other manufacturers, they would not be too out-of-place in their own unit block.

I'd advise going to 15mm or smaller for ACW.

That's a lot of information and ideas, thankyou for being frank. My figures are not the same size as Newline, I went for 20mm from foot to eye, as it was the same size I used for my WW1 figures. I now need to do some serious thinking.

I would fully agree. If you are going to do any range (or size) they should match current lines.

I agree with everyone else. A stand alone range will not do well.

I know I'm old-fashioned (because I'm old), but figures should be measured from bottom of foot to top of head, not to the eye!

Well, figures that are 20mm foot-to-eye are going to be roughly 22-23mm to the top of the head, which would make them 5'3"-5'6" (rounding) in 1/72 scale or 5'6"-5'9" in 1/76 scale. That's about perfect for the average American in the 1860s.

Personally, if you made all the gear (weapons, cartridge&cap boxes, backpack, etc) to a specified scale and then used castings of those items to equip your troops, I'd buy them as long as their kit was the same size as another line, regardless of their theoretical scale.

People are all sorts of different sizes. An 1861 Springfield doesn't magically get bigger when someone my size (6'ish) picks it up!

As a side note, making lots of 'equipment' sets would let you sell those separately, and I'd love to be able to convert various maker's troops to all have the same equipment!

Gotta match other ranges, then we will buy. Kallistra did big 10mm and although they are lovely they are not compatible with Pendraken etc so "no dinero seņor".

Well said!

Next to WWII, it seems like ACW is the most popular in 20mm. What seems to be lacking is decent artillery (carriages, limbers , caissons all rather weak) as well as a dearth of good personality figures . Of course really well done figures always sell well

bgbboogie02 Sep 2014 5:59 a.m. PST

20mm for me is for skirmish, had 6mm sold them now have Kallistra (12/15mm depending how you measure them) and am very happy with them.
