Hitler's deputy was apparently a wargamer. Peter Padfield in Hitler, Hess and Churchill describes how the senior Nazi took the Duke of Windsor (aka Edward VIII) upstairs to show him his collection of model ships and that they had a refight of the battle of Jutland.
Any other unusual wargamers that people know about?

I just read that Robin Williams had an entire room in his house devoted to toy soldiers. It was referred to as his "secret room" by the comedian that wrote about it (whose name escapes me now).

A friend of mine says Williams bought figures from him but Williams said he didn't game, just collected.

Peter Cushing aka Grand Moff Tarkin, Doctor Who played Little Wars and collected several armies.

The late Malcolm Forbes had an enormous collection of 54mm toy soldiers. He also had a copy of Little Wars. One would think he played at least once or twice.

Spartakus17 Aug 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

Wow! Maybe he could've contributed to the Ultramodern board here om TMP! You reckon?

I don't know if it is true but several years ago when he was in office I read that George H. W. Bush (the senior) collected military miniatures.

Buck21517 Aug 2014 3:59 p.m. PST

I read that comedian Mike Meyers collects and paints toy soldiers, but what is not known is if he gamed with them…

Rod I Robertson17 Aug 2014 4:26 p.m. PST

The late actor, Edward Woodward, was an avid miniature collector and wargamer.

I've heard that gaming has caught on big-time in certain Buddhist monasteries.

Is the monastery post for real?

James

George H Bush did collect. I saw an article in the Britains newsletter.

Also, don't forget Peter Jackson.

dBerczerk17 Aug 2014 6:05 p.m. PST

The monastery post is merely in jest.

Brian Smaller17 Aug 2014 6:24 p.m. PST

Is the monastery post for real?

Hell yes. Who knows more about karma than someone who plays dice games?

Jeigheff17 Aug 2014 6:37 p.m. PST

I think I can see some Photoshop work in the Buddhist monks photo. Please note the blurred right hand of the monk on the right, with a hard edge on top, for one thing. But the image makes a very good first, albeit mistaken, impression!

They're actually in the process of making large religious symbols on the floor using various colors of sand.

Brian Smaller17 Aug 2014 9:05 p.m. PST

I think you will find that they are actually just checking out if Wangchuk painted the eyes on those miniatures or cheated and just used a wash.

Bellbottom18 Aug 2014 3:52 a.m. PST

Don't forget Derek Guyler, actor, of 'Please Sir' fame, wargamer and heavily into Ancients and a Life Vice President of the Society of Ancients.

Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson used to do Napoleonics together. No joke.

The drummer Charlie from the Rolling Stones collects ACW – not sure if he games though.

Always knew Napoleonic gamers were a bad lot! :-)

Conrad Black believes he is Napoleon!

Rod I Robertson18 Aug 2014 7:10 p.m. PST

Apparently Henry Kissinger played the game Diplomacy (as well as the real life version).

Dynaman878919 Aug 2014 8:58 a.m. PST

Pete Schilling of course. Played ASL and other games, don't know if he did any miniature gaming.

I once ran a Viking raid participation game at a show in Cardiff and one of the players turned out to be the lead singer of The Cult (Wayne Something?). Strange bloke…
