One of my several objectives in starting my blog (Blunders on the Danube) originally was to not only share pictures of my own figures, both old and new, but to combine that with a pretty comprehensive guide to organization, uniforms and flags of the various armies that fought in the Napoleonic Wars, at least at the level that most of us Wargamers would need to paint our armies. After three and a half years, the number of posts covering uniform information has become quite extensive (over 80 posts covering 13 different nations), and it can be hard, even for me, to find a given guide despite the use of multiple tags. Thus, I have added a new page that will serve as a linked index to all of the posts covering Napoleonic uniforms, organization, and flags. link Here's what's there already, with plenty more to come over time: Austria "German" Line Infantry Part 1 "German" Line Part 2 Hungarian Line and Grenadiers Grenz Infantry Landwehr and Volunteers: Inner Auistria Landwehr and Volunteers: Upper and Lower Austria Landwehr and Volunteers: Bohemia and Moravia Hungarian Insurectio Dragoons and Chevaulegers Austrian Artillery and Technical troops Baden Grand Duchy of Baden, 1809 Bavaria Infantry Denmark/Norway Overview Line Infantry, Part 1 Line Infantry, Part 2 Light Infantry Liv and Guard Infantry Light Cavalry Heavy Cavalry Artillery Generals and Staff Flags and Standards Denmark and the 1813 Campaign Norwegian Army of 1808 Norwegian Army, 1814 France Line troops Line Infantry (Ligne) Part 1 Line Infantry (Ligne) Part 2 Line Infantry (Ligne) Part 3 Line Infantry (Ligne), Part 4 Light Infantry (Legere) Part 1 Light Infantry (Legere), Part 2 Chasseurs a Cheval Hussars Chevau-Leger Lanciers Dragoons Cuirasiers and Carabiniers Horse Artillery Foreign (Etranger) Troops Provisional Croatian Regiments Vistula Legion Infantry Portuguese Legion

Holymoly, that is extensive. I'm sure a lot here on TMP will be as I am, grateful for all your work that you have made available. My thanks. Cheers and happy gaming |

It is great fun to scan through, but do take that pinch of salt. I quickly noted the "Red Lancers" with the red and white pennon upside down. That sort of thing is so easily done. We have all got it wrong. But surely some one else has noted that. If this sort of thing is to be the "standard", it needs to be updated and respond to comments. Great work by you. However….There must be countless such trivial errors. Will they ever be fed back or just carried on for ever more? |

Hi DH I am happy to make note of any errors (of which I am sure there are quite a few) and update the posts accordingly; ditto for new information. Will I repaint the pennons? Not likely! :-) Peter |

The a note on the correction re: the pennons has been made, and a statement added to the page inviting corrections. |

Gonsalvo, Thankyou for this. it has been very helpful filling in some blanks from uniform information I haven't be able to get a more solid idea of what was going on with the uniform…IE the Portuguese is a good example of… An off note- your troops are mounted single file and 3 per base. Why this scheme which appears to be much different from what most other gamers/games have gone too with squarer stands and 2 rank mounting? I too have single rank mounting but, with 15mm, I have 4 per stand. I am contemplating going back to a two rank mounting especially, now that I have a British Army WIP and it is my introduction of two formation and it against 3 rank formations and though presenting that difference in the game. I can't seem to get away from the idea/paradigm of mounting them the same event though there was two formations… thanks MG |

MG, Glad you found some of the information useful! I have mounted my figures this way for, oh, more than 40 years! :-) Fads for mounting come and go – I have yet to find a rules set that I can NOT use with this mounting (and if I did, that set would not be used!). Most modern rules are much more basing independent than earlier rules sets, so it's really a case of what "look" you like and what fits your budget. In my humble opinion, one of the issues with the two rank basing its that it further aggravates the depth distortion that occurs with miniatures, which is already considerable. As long as the frontage of the unit is roughly correct, it won't matter much. As for 2 vs 3 ranks, the actual difference in depth of a line 2 deep vs 3 deep is trivial compared to the frontage! Bottom Line – mount them the way they work best for you, as a long as it is compatible with the rules you will play (and hopefully other local players). I personally loathe re-basing! |

Gonsalvo, I do love that you talk such sense. Mount the figures as you wish and the way that you feel looks good. Nice…… I think what you are offering is a terrific resource, but I am even more impressed that you responded so quickly to pointing out of a minor error. I hope others will input into this, even if controversial, to enhance this database even further. Those who know me will guess that the first link I tried was Gendarmes d'Elite of IG….you might need to work on that one still? |
Gonsalvo | 18 Aug 2014 5:09 p.m. PST |
Yes, DH, your passion (?lust, LOL) for the Gendarmes is well known to me. :-) In the likely event that you have additional information/corrections, please feel free to comment on the blog or contact me directly. I have no access to achives or primary sources, just a broad but hardly exhaustive collection of secondary sources, web links, etc., accumulated over 40 years in the hobby. The closest I came to primary source access is a good freind of mine living in Dresden, who himself has a good freind who works at the State Library/Archives in Karlsruhe (capital of Baden). I enjoyed researching the Baden army, which proved far more challenging than most other minor states, and potential access to the archives there would be fascinating…ripe topic for an Osprey, actually! Unfortunately, her response to his inquiry about military records, uniform regulations, prints etc., was "Why would anyone care about THAT?" :-( Not sure what place someone like that has working in an Library/Archive! G'day, Peter. Very nice, mate. You've shown the RIR uniforms very nicely and I do like the blue you used for the dragoons. However, the link to the Prussian Kuerassiere is broken- it takes you to the artillery. Dal. |

Hi Dal, Thanks for the head up – Link fixed! |

Very nice, Peter! I think the shabraque colour for the Brandenburgers came from the old 6KR (v. Quitzow), as did the excuse to use red for facings on the litewka. They also carried one of that regiment's standards and the bulk of the trained men (250 or so) that made up the new regiment came from v. Quitzow. I sent you an email on your AOL address with some info, as well. Cheers. Dal. |
