Here is a bit of background to explain some of the choices I have made for the army: link |
Insomniac | 08 May 2016 4:39 a.m. PST |
Well, I guess it's back to boring old pictures of converted miniatures again :D … here's a complete (apart from the light-sabre tips) Primaris Psyker… or Jedi Beastman… whichever works best for you :) :
There is a bit of blurb on the blog… including some Pug related fun :) : link It's good to get back to normal :D (whatever that is :o ). |
Insomniac | 15 May 2016 2:19 a.m. PST |
Here's a tiny bit of progress on the last of the Jedi Beastmen:
And there is a bit of news about how the Space Marine part of the army will be filled up, over at Inso's World: link |
Insomniac | 20 May 2016 11:57 p.m. PST |
In other news… I bought some of the new Mantic Forge Father 'Steel Warriors' recently and have put a couple together. I was hoping that they would fit into my army without any conversion but you will see from the pic that they are far too tall (from left to right: Squat, Squat/Steel Warrior, Steel Warrior, Space Marine):
I have quickly put together a mock-up of a Steel Warrior body on the legs from a 'sawn in half' plastic Squat (using blu-tack) to see how it looks… and I think that the height will work but I now need to work out how I am going to convert 20 of them without necessarily having to sculpt 20 pairs of legs :o … … nothing ever goes smoothly :( . There are other issues with them but I will sort out a review and post it in my blog once I can bring myself to do it. I am quietly disappointed with them… even though, in their own right, they are nice looking miniatures… just too big for my particular army :( |
Insomniac | 22 May 2016 3:27 a.m. PST |
I've got a bit further with my latest Jedi beastman:
For lots more information, including the latest Squat body sculpt and a full review of the new Mantic Steel Warriors, feel free to visit my Blog for the latest post: link |

Hopefully, I can work out how to get some decent casts because I've already started on three pairs of legs:
|
Insomniac | 28 May 2016 9:13 a.m. PST |
Well, I've finished the first 'leg blank':
I will be press moulding this and then adding pouches etc to the casts. I think that the legs have turned out OK (not awesome… just OK) but if the pressmoulding works, it will add a new dimension to how I produce the legs. If it doesn't work, I will have to get them cast up for me… so we'll have to see. this afternoon, I have been messing around with Blue Stuff / Instant Mould and I currently have a little cast drying in the stuff. I just put a standard plastic Squat body in there, just to see how it turns out. It will be squashed after I have seen what I need to :) . I am using a mix of Green Stuff and Milliput in the mould so now it's just a case of sitting and waiting for a couple of hours :) . This could be the start of a beautifull friendship (or not :o )…. |
Insomniac | 29 May 2016 7:32 a.m. PST |
I'll just be ticking along with the leg sculpting because they are a bit down the list of things to complete for the army… the first being the unit of Primaris Psykers / Jedi Beastmen… which, by chance, I have now finished:
I still need to adjust the base to tilt him forward a little but I am glad to have his sculpting done. Next up will be the three Ministorum Priests / Squat Berserkers… but I haven't started them yet. As is usually the case, there is more information on the Blog: link |
Insomniac | 31 May 2016 1:17 p.m. PST |
Back to the Squats and here is the first WIP of one of the Ministorum Priests / Squat Berserkers:
Still a long way to go but this head sort of sculpted itself so I just went with it. The other two are not as far along as this one… but I guess it's a start :D . |
Insomniac | 05 Jun 2016 5:31 a.m. PST |
I've started the second Berserker:
I have also been doing a bit of press moulding:
The results and a bit more information can be found on my latest blog post: link With my thoughts on my hobby on the post that follows the one above… or if you want a link: link |
Insomniac | 07 Jun 2016 9:57 a.m. PST |
Well… the first five Scout proxies are finished:
I now need to sculpt another pair of legs in a different pose for the next five. I think they've turned out OK so far and once I have made a total of four leg poses and press-moulded them up, I'll be able to mix and match between 5-man squads for a bit of variety. |
Insomniac | 09 Jun 2016 11:57 a.m. PST |
The second body is now finished so I only have three more to go now. The next one is on the cork :) :
Once they are done… I am hopefully going to be able to dedicate a little time to painting Death :D |
Insomniac | 12 Jun 2016 10:18 a.m. PST |
This week has been mostly Berserk :D :
There is more info on my blog (as usual): link |
Insomniac | 19 Jun 2016 8:28 a.m. PST |
All the berserkers are finished now:
There are individual pix of all of the berserkers and a WIP pic of the next unit (veterans) over at Inso's World: link |
Insomniac | 29 Jun 2016 4:51 a.m. PST |
Here's the first five Veteran Tyranid Hunters (more info on my blog: link ) :
|
Insomniac | 03 Jul 2016 7:28 a.m. PST |
It's been a slow week but the lasgunners for the Tyranid Hunters are all at the same stage now:
This pic shows the press-moulded heads that I made so that I could have space inside the helmet to sculpt on each face. These are all in need of faces (obviously), the helmets being filled/cleaned up and then it is just a case of gluing on the arms and packs. I am thinking that a couple of these will have some facial disfigurement/bionic implants and one may even have a full face-plate to hide his terrible injuries. I have also started a third detachment for my army but I am not in a position to share anything interesting just yet… but it will be fun :) . |
Insomniac | 03 Jul 2016 1:44 p.m. PST |
Hmmm…
Just the start of something :) (currently 18mm tall). |
Insomniac | 17 Jul 2016 7:18 a.m. PST |
Here's where it's at now:
Vindicare WIP. |
Insomniac | 23 Jul 2016 4:29 p.m. PST |
The finished Vindicare Assassin :) :

Insomniac | 14 Aug 2016 11:45 a.m. PST |
|
Insomniac | 02 Oct 2016 1:31 p.m. PST |
I have had a dodgy moment while sculpting the Eversor Assassin and he ended up massive so was shelved… so I did this instead… I went and finished the veteran Tyranid hunters:
|
Insomniac | 02 Oct 2016 10:47 p.m. PST |
Next up will be the female veterans :) |
Insomniac | 13 Oct 2016 12:39 p.m. PST |
Or not…and so the production line starts again. From leg sculpt, to press moulding and finally to being assembled with plastic components from a Mantic Steel Warrior… all that is needed now is the belt buckle, pouches and holsters to be sorted out and these will be finished:
I have another lump of putty in the mould at the moment and that should be ready to remove tomorrow. I plan on having six squads of five and that means I need to sculpt five different poses of legs to make every squad have no legs the same. I have already finished the first unit of five in one leg pose, this is the second with a third leg sculpt 'on the corks'. Once I have produced six casts from each of the five leg poses, I will mix them into their final units… Then I will have six units of Squat Hearthguard (count as Space Marine Scouts). |
Insomniac | 16 Oct 2016 1:56 a.m. PST |
They are all finished now:
Lots more information about them can be found on my blog: link Next up… another leg sculpt to complete :) . |
Insomniac | 23 Oct 2016 3:19 a.m. PST |
I have been putting together a Sgt Telion 'counts as' from one of the leg casts:
There is more info on my blog: link |

With the release of the next big boxed game from GW, I saw the new style plastic termies and had a thought…
… so I have bagged a few off Ebay and await their arrival to see what I can make of them :) |
Insomniac | 03 Nov 2016 2:53 p.m. PST |
I have got some now and here is an assembled torso next to an existing Exo:
I reckon there's enough space for some stumpy legs under that torso :) |
HidaSeku | 07 Nov 2016 3:14 p.m. PST |
Your work on these Squat conversions is incredible. I look forward to seeing your continued good work! |
Insomniac | 24 Dec 2016 7:46 a.m. PST |
It's been a while but here is the latest WIP for the Terminator suit. The head is loose (and will be replaced with a better one), the fists will get lightning claws, and the crotch/legs will be getting more armour… but it's the first WIP from my new house and I'm happy with it so far:

Insomniac | 30 Dec 2016 5:50 a.m. PST |
One step closer. The legs are finished and tabbed, ready to go for casting. As you can see from the picture, they are designed to fit in one way only (so adjustment would need to be made to turn the body, if you wanted to do that). I have also shown that the legs fit other bodies from the same kit… now it's just a case of getting them cast up…

Thanks to SDKFZ (an excellent tank builder on another forum) and his excellent Hanomag scratchbuild for a Chimera… I have started converting a 1/35th Tamiya Hanomag half track. So far I have glued the top and bottom of the hull together and then cut down the centreline of the kit. I then cut out a segment about 2cm from each side. The idea is to shorten and widen the kit. So far so good. All the cutting has been done and I have cleaned things up. I have also put in a lot of battens so that I can join everything together (they still need trimming but they need to dry at the moment). The next job is to put in a 1cm spacer down the middle and then assemble the hull. Here is my little workspace while my house is in disarray:
Note… the port is sitting minding it's own business… Nothing to see… Move along… |
Insomniac | 22 Jan 2017 9:19 a.m. PST |
Here's where I am at with the Hanomag pattern Chimera (obviously VERY WIP still):
|
Insomniac | 23 Jan 2017 10:47 a.m. PST |
I threw some wheels and tracks on it and think it is looking OK :) :

In order to create a full review, I have fitted the legs to all of the torsos from the Tartaros terminator sprues and am in the process of building my little Wolverine unit. Here is where I am at so far :) :
The white balls are 8mm acrylic beads. |
Insomniac | 29 Jan 2017 5:20 a.m. PST |
So today we are little further ahead with the transport:
… and a lot further ahead with my little Wolverine squad:
As is usually the case on a Sunday, there is more information on my blog: link |

Insomniac | 05 Feb 2017 10:12 a.m. PST |
It's been a slow week but I am getting the details put on the Hanomag Pattern Chimera. I've added hatches, a few details to the turret and the start of the front detail. Ticking along… :) :

It's got to a point where I am going to end up messing them up because I am bored with them so, as far as they are concerned, the tank and transport are finished for now:
The tape holding the top of the tank on and the sideskirts on the transport on, is just temporary because I will need things to be removable for painting. |
Insomniac | 16 Feb 2017 3:35 p.m. PST |
I've been messing about with Exos… four down, one to go :) :

It's been very slow lately… but I seem to have gripped things again… and I finished all the arms in just three days… These are the Maiden Guard; female Squat veterans:
