Fellow gamers,

I'm starting a 28mm FIW skirmish project, which will begin with wilderness 1:1 RPG/micro-skirmish, and hopefully expand to some small battles involving structures such as cabins and forts.

To that end, I'll be starting with THW's Long Rifle (don't have the rules in-hand yet), and evolving through THW's Muskets & Mohawks. Other rules which have been recommended that I'm considering include This Very Ground, Muskets & Tomahawks, Fire and Steel, The Sword and the Flame (Forest variant), Among the Warparties, Last Argument of Kings, and a look into Flintlock Force on Force (since the core ruleset is the one ruleset that I'm familiar with).

That said, is there possibly one basing standard that would accommodate most or all of these rules? 20mm square? 25mm round? Future expansion into movement trays?

Solo campaign. Most of the figures will be Indian and Colonial irregulars, to start. Individual activation and actions, to start. Unit activations, cabins, cannon, Highlanders, palisades, et cetera to be added later, moving up through the command scale as the accumulation of table-ready figures allows.

28mm FIW basing for both micro-skirmish (man vs. man) and small battles (platoon vs. platoon)? Figure ratio to remain 1:1. Ground scale = approximately figure scale, at least initially. For use with around a dozen figures on the 3' X 3' table, and around forty on the 4' X 6' table.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

With skirmish gaming, don't worry about "standard basing". Go with what the figures look best on.

I base everything on 3/8" ID washers.

Litko and others make laser cut movement trays for either square or round bases in pretty much every standard wargamming size . washer have an advantage … you can use magnetic trays , also makes the models easy to store and transport .
as long as you and your opponents use the same basing it shouldn't matter what rules you're using .

Do what looks pleasing to you; it shouldn't have any effect on the game/s.

I like square bases because they form up better, 1" squares so the bigger figures fit on them. But I also have a set of tiny 'true 25mm' figures, that I mount on 1/2" X 3/4" rectangles, so they fit better into confined spaces (inside buildings, aboard ship models). And I have some sets that are mounted on 1" or 1 1/8" washers that I haven't bothered to remount. They all work fine together.

I'd go 20x20mm square bases for M&T. Well, that's what I'm doing anyway. My Colonials are on circular bases, for the weird reason that I got loads of Foundry 'Mexican Adventure' figs, and they don't fit on 20x20. I'm going to use them for those Buck Surdu rules though, which are basing agnostic.

Just big enough to stop figures tumbling off hills!
