As every Confederate State (incl South Carolina which had a USCT Regiment) eventually had units in the Federal Army I am wondering, what did their colors look like? Did they carry State flags in addition to National Colors? More specifically, what about Texas units? I know that areas of the State, such as the Hill Country, maintained strong Union sentiment throughout the war, as well as the Tejano Cavalry. Might they have carried a Lone Star flag in addition to say National Colors? |

Many of the US (Southern) units, simply carried a national flag, so as to avoid confusion and getting killed by the CS forces OR by their own…. |

This is honestly the first time I have ever heard this question asked. As just a swag, I would give them National Colors and the Infantry Eagle Colors: link |

I can not find any record of state flags. I would guess that they followed the usual Union practice of 1 national and 1 regimental flag. |

The only colored regiments that I know of which carried state colors were those from Massachusetts and Ohio. Even then, when a state color was no longer serviceable, it was almost always replaced by a federal regimental color. For example, by Olustee, the 54th Mass had retired it's damaged state color and carried only the national and federal regimental colors. FWIW, that also remains true with the vast majority of all federal regiments. When their state colors were no longer useable, they were replaced by federal regimental flags. V/R |

Yes, go with the national colors and the blue with an eagle for the regimental. Very few units carried unusual or unique regimental colors (most famous being the Irish Brigade). State colors went away fairly quickly in the Union army. One thing to look out for is that a number of colored regiments began as numbered state regiments and were later re-named as USCT. One example – The Louisiana Native Guards became the Corps d'Afrique and then became the 73rd-76th USCT. The white regiments raised in the southern states were numbered just like the ones raised in the northern states. |
