"China is planning to build a total of 12 Type 052D guided-missile destroyers, but it will eventually have the capability to construct larger destroyers with displacement of over 10,000 tonnes, said Fang Bing, a military expert, in an interview with the state-owned Beijing Television on Aug. 12. Fang said Type 052D destroyers are likely to play a very important role in the People's Liberation Army Navy for a period of time. Known as the Chinese Aegis, Fang said that the Type 052D destroyer is currently the most powerful warship China has constructed. He said that the primary mission of Type 052D destroyers, equipped with active phased array radar and a vertical launching system, is to serve as the core of China's carrier battle group…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

Yeah, sounds about right. You need a pretty darn big ship to carry an adequate number of anti-air missiles. After all, Ticos are 9800tons and 'only' carry 122 missiles of all types, Burkes are about the same and only have 90 missile cells, and the 14,500ton Zumwalts only have 80 missile cells. |
