"The company of the Christian men were noble and well ordered, and of Hungary there were many cross-bows on horseback."
Froissart, on the Nicopolis campaign. A century before this fresco, but it does suggest a Hungarian tradition of mounted crossbowmen.

I've always wondered, how was a crossbow loaded while on horseback? It looks hard enough to do while standing.

Maybe they use smaller crossbows that would be easier to draw on horseback?

A crows-foot might work – but I recall reading that there is some debate as to if the crossbows were fired from horseback, or if they were a kind of mounted infantry. Anyone aware of reenactors trying it?

Plenty of examples of crossbows being used from horseback in the historical sources, Paul Dolnstein even drew a German mtd crossbowman taking a pot shot at him during the Landshut war of succession.

You should be able to see more of one crossbow, but the perspective is not right – one man's head is in front of the crossbow but he and his horse are behind.
