Very interesting, some things never change.

I interviewed a W.W. II infantryman from the 1st ID, fought through North Africa, Sicily and NW Europe. He said that you got rid of anything you didn't need as you had to carry the weight.

The one thing he carried all through combat was a small cribbage board and deck of cards.

It might be worth mentioning, very few items are extant examples, outside of the 20th-21st century. However, some of the replicas are decent.
