This weekend I picked up a boxed boardgame called "CONQUEST"
It's a 1972 edition and has a bunch of metal pieces that represent armies, I think. The author is listed as Donald Benge.

Any info at all would be helpful.

Is this it (or a version)?

Maybe a version, but not the one I have.

Gnu2000 is correct – it is the same game. There were a couple of versions over the years, in multiple languages. Some had metal pieces, some did not. Plus you could buy the metal pieces separately.
