I just found out Robin Williams is dead of an apparent suicide and am saddened at his passing.

link

He is a loss to all of us as he was an avid miniatures gamer who played Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. I got to meet him at E3 a number of years ago as I was stuck in the unbelievable Starbucks line right behind him for about 40 minutes. I was shocked to meet him, and that in a place where everyone has a personal assistant to do such things for them, he was getting his own drink and buying drinks for others on his own. We got to talk about his interest in games he saw on the floor of the show and his interest in a game I was working on at the time and in his interest in miniatures gaming. He had a gleam in his eye when he talked about his experiences playing with his kids.

Sorry to see you pass, Robin.

I painted some Ral Partha Zulu war lancers for him when he was filming Mrs Doubtfire. He gave me the script to his movie toys and autographed it: To Rich, Make fun not war.
Thank you
Robin Williams

So very sad, Today the laughter died
Rest in peace Robin

What a pity he didn't have a big game coming up this weekend -- something to look forward to.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

I was shocked when I read the heading to this thread…now I'm very saddened I remember him when I was a kid watching Mork and Mindy…he seemed larger than life to me.

I had no idea he had an interest in gaming (or more than an interest by the sounds of things)

Thanks for the stories guys…they brought a tear to my eye.

Rest in Peace Robin and may the Lord bless you for all the happiness and joy you shared with so many

Na-no, na-no!

He was one of the funniest people on the planet.

RIP.

Sad news … I hadn't known he was a wargamer, though. Makes sense, I guess. RIP

Phil
Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam for my memories …

Oh Captain! My Captain!

Words cannot express how very saddened I am by this.

Yep. He and Billy Crystal supposedly held a 40K match in a Games Workshop store (a fundraiser event, I've heard) in which they paired off with Yiddish Orks vs. Gay Eldar. Not sure whose army was whose, but the game was reported to be hilarious to watch, as you would imagine.

There are a lot of accounts of Robin being sighted at game stores around the US (even a few photos), and he's known to have collected a wide range of figures.

Sad to see him leave us, especially in such a way. He was always one of my favorites.

Sorry to see him go. His concert films would make me laugh until my sides literally ached.

Robin used to frequent Gamescape in San Francisco when I lived out there. I used to sell painted models on consignment and he was my best customer. What always struck me was how down to earth he was, in fact, I found him to be shy, and how much he loved his kids.

I was about to quip that this is for "Obituaries", on TMP Plus, but hey, if he was a war gamer, this is as good a spot to laud him as any.

I believe that the correct pronunciation is "Nanoo, nanoo". ;)

Dead Poet's Society was one of his best, no doubt. My son addresses me often with "Father, oh my father", in imitation of Robin's teacher role from that movie, and of course I take it as a compliment.

Suicide, that would be ironic if true, since "What Dreams May Come" and DPS were both anti-suicide themed movies, as was also "Patch Adams"….

Manu-nanu. Farewell Robin, you will be greatly missed.

I lived in the time of Robin Williams!

Buck21511 Aug 2014 8:42 p.m. PST

I followed Robin Williams when he was a bit part comedian on "The Richard Pryor Show", the re-make of "Laugh-in", Happy Days", and of course, "Mork and Mindy (Shazbot! Nanu, Nanu!)". I loved his movies and whenever he guest-starred on tv shows was always a pleasant surprise. I, and millions of others will miss him. Thank you for the laughs, Robin. You are among the greats: Freddie Prinze, Jonathan Winters, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor. We will miss you…

Very good actor. He will be missed. So sad.

Coelacanth193811 Aug 2014 9:23 p.m. PST

I'm betting that this is going to be another 'Del Shannon' suicide where the medication is to blame. I've been on antidepressant meds too, and I almost tapped out a few times on account of them.

snurl111 Aug 2014 9:57 p.m. PST

His old standup routine albums are absolutely hilarious.

Porthos12 Aug 2014 3:16 a.m. PST

I am very sorry to hear this. A great actor to be enjoyed in The World according to Garp, One Hour Photo and Good Will Hunting (to name just three of an impressing many) will be missed. I do hope that in the coming weekend somewhere someone during a wargame convention will go to stand on a chair and say "Oh Captain ! My Captain" in his honor.

Dark Knights And Bloody Dawns12 Aug 2014 5:36 a.m. PST

Robin has passed and Monty Python have all retired…

Tis a bleak year…

Augustus12 Aug 2014 6:08 a.m. PST

Will never see his like again. Heart-breaking.

Old Slow Trot12 Aug 2014 6:45 a.m. PST

Heavy sigh. Made a good one also in "Jakob The Liar". Loved his stand-up stuff, especially his "Live At the Met" special.

DeRuyter12 Aug 2014 6:47 a.m. PST

A 40k game between Robin Williams and Billy Crystal!?! Wow! That would have been something to behold. I didn't know he was a wargamer. A sad time for his family. He will be missed.

Good night Vietnam….RIP

ajbartman12 Aug 2014 10:14 a.m. PST

I actually meet him many years ago in a game store in Sacramento. Sunrise Hobbies I believe was the name of the store.

Loved his stand up.

Shazbat!

Sorry to see such a nice and funny man pass away, especially from a depression induced suicide.

Find peace at last, Robin.
