Hello I remember reading '1066: Year of Conquest', may years ago. I have recently got the Hastings bug again. Can anybody recommend some newer of other classic books on the Battle, Stamford Bridge, Fulford, or the conquest itself. Also a set of rules for warfare of the period. Oh and figures in the 28mm Range. Thinking about embarking on a project to refight the Year 1066. Thanks |

Well, yes, of course I am the "Biggest" living fan on the planet, and I have rools, and a fair number of Old Glory minis, etc. and etc. Books: Jim Bradbury's is a must link . Stephen Morillo's compilation of original sources is a huge benefit to the historical approach link . This one is a good over all history: link . Although I don't buy their argument for Caldbec hill as the "exclusive site" for the battle of Hastings, these guys have produced a fun book to dig into: link . My website treating all I think I know/knew and other stuff besides is here: link |

Hard to beat the Gripping Beast line of miniatures for this period. |

Great War Ace, I have bought your rules years ago and enjoyed your (previous ?) website ! 1066.us or something like that, IIRC. And thank you for the suggestion of Jim Bradbury: I have his book about Stephen and Mathilda and enjoyed it very much ! |

@Porthos: 1066.us or something like that, IIRC. That was back when I bought a domain name to my website. But the provider jacked the price up a hundred percent, then jacked THAT up a hundred percent, i.e. from five bucks to twenty. I quit the domain name. Another great book is Lordship and Military Obligation in Anglo-Saxon England, by Richard Abels link. Morillo devotes a chapter in his book taken from Abels' thesis on bookland tenure and military obligation…. |

that's a great wargame site Ace, and bookmarked. you can also try "as told in the great hall" for dark age wargaming scenarios including Hastings. for miniatures: gripping beast and conquest miniatures. for rule sets: hail caesar, war and conquest, or clash of empires come to mind. i'm gearing up for the battle of ethundun for Hail Caesar. haven't tried the others yet. |

One book well worth the read is Marc Morris The Norman Conquest. One to avoid is Nick Austin Secrets of the Norman Invasion. Nick argues the battle was 3 miles away in a village called Crowhurst. Of course he lives in Crowhurst so me may have some other interest in its promotion. Conquest miniatures for the Normans especially now they have released archers as well. |
