Forum rules allow for discussion of contemporary military operations, as long as the discussions remain focused on military aspects, and do not stray into politics. Sometimes those posts have gone on the Modern Discussion board, and sometimes the Modern Media board (due to being newpaper reports). However, a number of people are interested in post-WWII ("Modern") gaming, without having an interest in contemporary actions, often seeing them as being "too soon" to be depicted on the wargames table. As an attempt at compromise, the Ultramodern board has been launched. This will be the board for discussion military actions of the current time, and as far back as ten years. Those who are interested in Moderns but not contemporary actions will now be able to unsubscribe to this specific board, and be able to avoid such discussions. The editors will be active at relocating new discussions into the appropriate Ultramodern board until members learn of the change. |

Sounds reasonable. Modern: 1946-2005 and after (since the last 10 years would change as time goes on). Ultramodern: 2005+ through the current year. |

We have a Cold War board covering up to 1989. I'm confused; if Ultramoderns covers now to 2004, is the Modern board expected to cover only 1990-2003? |
Blake Walker | 09 Aug 2014 10:28 p.m. PST |
Good. I game 28mm Modern Afghanistan using Ambush Alley. I like Ultra Moderns. I'll post here for game ideas, scenarios. I also have an interest in 28mm Vietnam. But that's for the Cold War forum. Thanks, Bill. Blake |
GeoffQRF | 09 Aug 2014 11:35 p.m. PST |
I think it only covers March 2nd through to June 5th. |
Weasel | 09 Aug 2014 11:54 p.m. PST |
Make it a floating date. It always covers the week after the present date. If the topic goes on for more than 7 days, it's not "history" and no longer allowed. ;) At least this solves the problem of the CNN news feed posts. |

Would near-future scenarios be included in the Ultramodern board? |

So WW2 to 1945, Cold War 1945-1989, Modern 1990-2004, Ultra-modern 2004-2014… Presumably the end of modern and the start of Ultra-modern will move each year as ultra-modern will cover the preceeding 10 years up to whichever year we are in (so in 5 years time it will be modern =1990-2009, ultra-modern 2009-2019). Things like Korea, Vietnam, Arab-Israeli wars, Soviets in Afghanistan, Falklands, Grenada then all fall into Cold War (where they are now). Likely conflicts for the new modern board would be… the Gulf War/Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechnya, Darfur, Israel… Leaving ultra modern board discussing… umm, Iraq (ongoing), Afghanistan (ongoing), Darfur (ongoing), Israel (ongoing), Somalia (ongoing), Bush Wars, Chadian Civil war… |

I'm confused; if Ultramoderns covers now to 2004, is the Modern board expected to cover only 1990-2003? Not every military engagement between '46 and '90 was part of the Cold War. And not every violent conflict amenable to miniature wargaming of that period was a military engagement. the Ultramodern board has been launched In the spirit of TMP Talk, since the paint is (paritally) dry on this, allow me to complain about the name. For me, ultramodern evokes images of near-future potential conflicts with the option of "what-if" situations and mild improvements on current technology. I like the "contemporary" word the Lord High Editor used better. That said, I only support a poll for summary deletion of posts calling for a poll on changing the name of the Ultramodern board. As long as they happen within the next ten years of this post. |
GeoffQRF | 10 Aug 2014 8:06 a.m. PST |
Not every military engagement between '46 and '90 was part of the Cold War I think the title is more one of convenience than specifically related to east-west face-offs. |

I would like to thank the EIC for this. There are quite a few posts which quote and link to opinion pieces as if they are news, with little or no commentary or analysis by the OP, let alone a discussion of the bias of the source, usually followed by the same few posters beating the same old drums. As I come to TMP for the technical hobby information, I have yet to engage in these discussions, and will attempt to continue to refrain from doing so. And yes, I know I can filter them, and customize my TMP experience. Cheers. |
etotheipi | 10 Aug 2014 11:14 a.m. PST |
And yes, I know I can filter them, and customize my TMP experience. Actually, its kind of hard to automatically filer OT posts without cutting out tons of stuff that might be relevant. Computers don't think and can only explicitly follow the rules they are given. Cutting out posts based on who posted them or where they are in the site is easy. Cutting out posts by distinguishing the difference between discussion of what is happening and could happen vice what should happen is difficult, at best. You're pretty much stuck reading the post until it goes astray. |
napthyme | 10 Aug 2014 11:29 a.m. PST |
Man this one is gonna be nearly impossible to stay within the rules because once you mention what countries army your building and who there going to fight your already nearly breaking the politics rule. |
GeoffQRF | 10 Aug 2014 11:41 a.m. PST |
I think fighting is in breach of the new health and safety policy |
Weasel | 10 Aug 2014 1:19 p.m. PST |
To be fair, the moderns board was becoming "current affairs politics" and "post how much you want to bomb ISIS" in any event. This move just separates things out a bit and allows some gaming and modelling related questions to actually flourish. |
ScoutJock | 10 Aug 2014 5:20 p.m. PST |
Canes football should be posted on the Cold War board. That was the last time they were relevant to CFB. |

'Canes football? Bored.' They aren't talking about proper football (or Rugby) |
Weasel | 11 Aug 2014 11:17 a.m. PST |
I'm mostly joking, they could probably be covered just fine with existing figures out there.
link Not sure if we still use the MG3's for squad support though or if they switched from that. Some Home Guard figures with G3's would be keen, but I doubt they'd be a big seller.
Apparently, they've ditched the G3 too. Cold War territory, they'd have used them though. |
GeoffQRF | 11 Aug 2014 11:21 a.m. PST |
We do have Germans with G3, and G36 (both with MG3), although Wiki seems to think they use the C7? link |
Weasel | 11 Aug 2014 11:27 a.m. PST |
They do use C7 now. The G3 was in use during the cold war era. After the switch, "home guard" (home defence forces essentially) kept the G3 for a while longer. In 98 or so, when I did my mandatory service, conscripts and home guard still had G3 but the professional army (the 7 guys we mail out to peace keeping operations) had switched. From looking at your site, it looks like your post war Germans could work fine for the great Danish reconquest of England :) |
GeoffQRF | 11 Aug 2014 11:29 a.m. PST |
So when I finish the Cold War Canadians (with SLR) perhaps I should do a modern Canadian/Danish range… |
Weasel | 11 Aug 2014 11:31 a.m. PST |
I'll buy a few packs of anything Scandinavian you do :) I imagine Norwegians in winter kit would be popular too. |
GeoffQRF | 11 Aug 2014 1:39 p.m. PST |
Armies Army is going to do Cold War Scandinavians, although I may consider some modern figures when I do the CV-90 Looking at that photo, a thought springs to mind… (Despite being left handed) I have always made the figures right handed. I generally do 3 poses so you get a random mix of 3/3/2 in a pack of 8. 3 in 8 left handers seems a bit disproportionate (even for patrolling) but would a generic pack of 8 left handers with M16s be of interest? |
Weasel | 11 Aug 2014 2:31 p.m. PST |
Anything that adds more variety in poses is a good thing in my book. |

Oh dear. This new board is obviously either a DH trap or a subtle way to create a Tango board without naming it after him. Unchecked it is. It's no more a DH trap than when the topics were scattered on other boards. People need to be aware of forum rules. As for Tango, he is a fantastic sharer of information, and this board will be richer for it. |
miniMo | 12 Aug 2014 6:06 p.m. PST |
Cold War, Modern and the Ultra-Modern boards should have their respective timespans listed in the titles of the boards. Otherwise they are nebulous jargon Boards WIthout Borders. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 12 Aug 2014 6:43 p.m. PST |
How do you list a moving timespan? (Ultramodern) |
Lion in the Stars | 12 Aug 2014 8:00 p.m. PST |
Cold War: NATO versus Warsaw Pact, 1947-1989 Moderns: 1947-1991 Ultramoderns: 1991 to present day |
GeoffQRF | 12 Aug 2014 9:20 p.m. PST |
That's why we refer to our range as postwar, not Cold War |

Well it seems it was bound to happen. With in many cases the topics devolve into personal attacks, heated derisive vitriolic comments that have no relevance to the topic, my uncle is going to beat you up, your mother dresses you funny, etc., etc. … And as I noted previously … I have learned the differences between many Euros and Yanks is much more diverse than I first believed. Hence on the UM Board it became more and more clear. |
