All for safety? Hard to believe anyone could miss the monument. I say leave it be and put in a four way stop.

Grizzly7108 Aug 2014 2:52 p.m. PST

If it's been there since 1895, you'd think they wouldn't have run the roads right into it.

DyeHard08 Aug 2014 3:03 p.m. PST

Looks like a good place for a roundabout!

Jamesonsafari08 Aug 2014 3:55 p.m. PST

Wow, somebody failed Road Planning class didn't they?
Yeah, put a flower bed around it, and install some lights, 4 way stops signs or a roundabout and call it a day. Cheaper than moving it!
Although I've been told that American drivers find 4-way stops and roundabouts rather challenging.

North Carolina had one of their monuments hit and destroyed by a stupid driver about two years ago. They have been trying to get it fixed and replaced but the city doesn't want to put it back where it was.

It's interesting to see that they said there were 28 accidents there at that intersection. How many of them involved the monument?

Based on the lack of damage I saw to it…not many….I'd say the majority of the accidents was probably drivers "too busy/important" to stop at the intersection….

Cerdic08 Aug 2014 4:07 p.m. PST

Needs a roundabout. Dead simple!

Old Pete08 Aug 2014 4:10 p.m. PST

Roundabout is good option.

ACW Gamer08 Aug 2014 4:16 p.m. PST

@James…..yes, many Americans lose their friggin' minds when they get into roundabouts.

THEN when you change sides of the road in the UK, it becomes a quantum physics equation. European vacation was not far off "look kids, Parliament,Big Ben!…….look kids, Parliament,Big Ben!…..look kids, Parliament,Big Ben!'

Might be better to move it to an ACCESSIBLE place. Where people can appreciate it at leisure (instead of at 50mph). I know, what a novel idea…

Not a huge fan of roundabouts, but we've got one in the town square of my fair city, and yes, it's around a Civil War monument.

Aside from the expense, I really don't see the fuss with moving it out of the street, maybe into a park. The monument doesn't need to change, just be moved. But if the folks of the town want it to stay in place, then the roundabout or four-way stop makes sense. As it is right now, the flashing lights and black warning stripes look like an eyesore to me. A little grassy circle with flowers, etc., seems just the thing.

morrigan08 Aug 2014 7:41 p.m. PST

2 more stop signs would be cheap.

I think the roads were there first, and most (if not all) horsepower in town then was fueled by oats.

Well judging by the news item, it doesn't do much for driver line of sight, so I can see the traffic issue.

Maybe the roundabout would be better as it could give more chance of stationary and moving vehicles seeing each other.

Cerdic09 Aug 2014 6:19 a.m. PST

We have loads of roundabouts with stuff in the middle. It is a good solution. All the driver needs to do is look to his right, or left in your case, if there is nothing coming he goes.

138SquadronRAF09 Aug 2014 8:20 a.m. PST

Trouble is the Merkins don't grock the roundabouts.

donlowry09 Aug 2014 10:03 a.m. PST

Couldn't see the story for some stupid commercial, but I suggest they keep the monument and move the town.

Trajanus09 Aug 2014 1:09 p.m. PST

Hey! Lateral thinking – I like it!

BW195909 Aug 2014 2:34 p.m. PST

Thanks for the photo Chris.

Round abound or traffic circle as we call them in Alberta. Easiest solution, would keep everyone happy hopefully. It would be a shame to have to move it.

Ivan DBA10 Aug 2014 10:50 p.m. PST

We have a few roundabouts here in Austin. I've never observed any "Merkins" having trouble with them (be it grocking, or just driving through them). Sorry if that doesn't match up with your expectations.

OSchmidt11 Aug 2014 4:33 a.m. PST

We have a virtual twin of the same statue in Newton NJ (They produced these by the trainload for towns wanting to put one up. Ours however stands in a one block sized city park in the center of town. Seems to me the best thing is to buy that vacant lot to the left and rear o the Statue and relocate it to there.

I suspect though that the real reason is someone has worked themselves into a huff of "offence" and they want to relocate it to the city dump.

If it's been there since 1895, you'd think they wouldn't have run the roads right into it.

Yeah, but you would also think that people wouldn't build their houses next to an airport, or build a school next to a fertilizer factory. People don't plan ahead.

capncarp12 Aug 2014 6:16 a.m. PST

Chris, you're brilliant! You've given us the answer in your first photo--a hand-in-hand barricade of children in turn of the century clothing! Why, nothing would dare to run over those cute little darlings!
Actually, a quatrefoil of guard rails could gently guide the traffic and protect the monument.
Gettysburg's "square" is actually a circle and it works ok if people are courteous and traffic is low to moderate and everyone keeps moving slowly: in high volume it's best to know which back streets to use to get there from here.
Roundabouts and traffic circles are for civilized genteel populaces. Which is why New Joisey has removed most of their demolition derby intersections, in self defense.
And Rebelyell--sometimes zoning changes and the factory or the pig farm or the army depot moves in next to you, not vice versa.

Who is getting paid to move it or who is getting paid to make a new road or roundabout ? Follow the $$$ …

Old Pete12 Aug 2014 8:04 a.m. PST

Roundabout in Gettysburg is very busy and works well. When I went to Richmond Virginia monuments to Gens. Lee, Jackson, Stuart were all in the middle of roundabouts and did not seem a big problem.

Trajanus12 Aug 2014 9:07 a.m. PST

I would imagine any tampering with those three would earn a lynching!
