Mine are all 25mm/1 inch diameter round bases (supplied by the manufacturer or metal washers, depending on the model) for standard size "infantry" type models.

MajorB05 Aug 2014 4:09 a.m. PST

I mount 28mm figures on 2p coins.

20mm square or 25mm round. There are also 25mm square and 30mm round but these are oversize and usually with 30mm figures.

The two main sizes are 25mm round slotta's like what GW uses or 30mm "newstyle" slottas with a rounded-over edge as seen with privateer press, Infinity, and other recent skirmish games.

Assuming you want your product to be usable with the whole range of what is sometimes referred to as 28mm (i.e. 28-34mm) whatever you build should be able to accommodate the newstyle 30mm slottas. The bases can vary just a touch in my experience so I would recommend at least 32 or 33m clearance.

Best of luck with the new product. If I were you I would definitely try and find a way to market it to Infinity players. The look of your trains would definitely fit that setting. It's one of the fastest growing wargames and populated with gamers who are willing to pay good money for good models.

Mine are pretty much all either 20X20mm square (historical) or 20mm round (modern/sci-fi); I mostly use the Renedra bases

Thanks for information, I will have o looking into posting a note on data-sphere & others, once completed the design.

Not that far off finishing the base carriage design.
Will set driver cab as 33-34mm deep. The carriages are 29L x 5H x 7cm wide, carriage is angled slightly so reduces width at top to 5cm.

At moment the single doors are 20mm W x 40mm H, side double doors will be 40x44mm, can widen doors without any problem.

Regards.

MMG.

Well done that man!

Mine are either on 1p or (mainly) 2p bases plus some on slotta bases of a similar size to a 2p coin.

Infinity uses 25mm rounds for infantry, 40mm rounds for most remotes and a few BIG infantry or very small battlesuits, and 55mm for the larger remotes and almost all battlesuits.

30mm round-shoulder bases like Dark Age, Relic Knights, or Privateer Press aren't standard/tournament legal for Infinity. I've generally been using the 30mm bases for my civilians in Infinity instead of 25mm.

I actually use 3/4" washers so that I have a pretty small footprint.

I tend to use either 25mm or 30mm round for scifi stuff and some historicals, I prefer the round to square, and only my warhammer army is still on square ones

Sorry Mad Mecha,
Lion is right. I must have been thinking of other games.

Still, if one is going to make a train for modern to near-future gaming, it really should be able to accommodate the 30mm rounds that alot of skirmish games are using.

I personally don't see the the point of the 30mm new-styles since the actual basing area ( 23mm ) is exactly the same ( see my comparisons here: link ) for both them and 25mm slottas. I still put most all my sci-fi infantry on 25mm round slottas.

chromedog05 Aug 2014 10:10 p.m. PST

My "25mm" round slotta bases (from several different sources, not just GW) are 25mm base and 23mm deck (topside).

Those are the GW, CB, Old grenadier slotta bases, and a pack I bought a while ago from Doug @ eM-4.

Dexter Ward06 Aug 2014 3:41 a.m. PST

20mm square for infantry, 20x40 for mounted.

Cergorach06 Aug 2014 11:55 a.m. PST

A lot of the popular sci-fi skirmish games are using 30mm round bases (Infinity, Mercs, etc.). I'm guessing that those kinds of games are looking more for monorail scenery then the mass battle 40k ish games.

Mad Mecha Guy your web site is coming back very slowly for me and does not draw images, as if it is bandwidth throttled. (It's not my own connection -- I can pull other sites with large images fully.) I was able to see some images using the Google cached version.

30mm bases are difficult to use on 1 inch / 25mm grid systems which are very very commonly used in many skirmish level games.

It is true some miniature lines do use these but as I mention above from what I can tell these are typically oversized figures (true 30mm or bigger).

As a customer it is difficult to see these larger figure scales and larger bases as other than a deliberate marketing ploy. The larger the figure the more impressive it looks and if figures from existing potential competitors look smaller and less impressive, well, that can't hurt sales.

So again, if you want compatibility which is implied by your question "how big the average 28mm figure base is these days?", then I repeat my suggestion which is to *not* use 30mm bases.

Also I see your 15mm Mono-Rail line is gridless, but you do have enclosed structures (train cars, equipment sheds, etc.) and internal furnishings (tables, cabinets, etc). The larger the base the harder it is to fit figures in and amongst these. You might be best served by smaller 20mm / .75" bases if your figures can fit them.

Dear CeruLucifus

I will have to bug website provider in morning about slownes0,s was working yesterday.

I was asking about Base size so get idea what minimum size I should make an area. Not putting gird or furniture in carriages as would get in way of figures. Excepting the cab which I got space on sheet will add some small consoles. Might do some side benches as an extra cost, the bench would be along windows (facing inwards) leaving space in middle for figure placement.

20mm washers or death! I won't surrender! :)
(and a few 20mm square bases for some infantry trained to walk in close order).

Lion in the Stars11 Aug 2014 8:36 a.m. PST

20mm washers don't necessarily fit under my Infinity minis, sadly. Some of them need bigger basing area.

But honestly, I'd still make the model able to hold minis on a 30mm or even 40mm base.

Mad Mecha Guy11 Aug 2014 9:18 a.m. PST

The monorail design has been finished, will fit 30mm bases & to an extent 40mm bases, might be cosy though.
