Even a simple name change to "Figure Anatomy" might change the tone and help to influence the content of the board, to bring it more in line with its "stated purpose" of being a sub-forum:

For discussion of the anatomy of miniature figures.

Without any particular sexist slant or "male gaze" as its main (only?) focus.

Possibly turning it from a perceived negative to a useful and functional place to discuss figure anatomy above and beyond just miniature T&A.

Or not. Cheers.

Well said Repiqueone.

It is rather school boyish, it should man up and either go the whole hog or disappear.

Even the schoolboys can find better pics on the web than in the more boobies forum!

Pathetic and rather sad its here at all really.

TwinMirror03 Aug 2014 5:34 a.m. PST

The board should definitely be renamed. I suggest simply 'nudes & erotica', or 'nudes and pin-ups'; or for those who can't approach the subject without a shield of euphemism, perhaps 'figure studies.'

As a former art student, I find both those that become upset about nudes in art, and those that snigger at it in a childish manner, to be simililary prurient and prudish – both responses seem unbefitting an adult.
Equally, there is nothing inherently bad about eroticism; like many things in life it is your own relationship to it which defines the thing.
Some of the figures on the board are in my opinion, somewhat cheesy or burlesque, but really, so are a great many non-nude and non-erotic figures on the forum in general. Gurning space warriors with giant shoulder pads and even bigger guns, angriliy shaking a severed head?
I find it amazing people can become upset or provoked over a nude figure study, while happily play a game involving mass murder.

Let's face it – all these things are just playing make-believe, they're not worth getting upset about. And most of us can distinguish fantasy from reality – to a practical extent, anyway!

Broglie03 Aug 2014 7:48 a.m. PST

Well said Repiqueone !!

Korvessa03 Aug 2014 10:08 a.m. PST

Here's a thought. Long ago I unchecked the box for the category so it doesn't appear on my front page. Forgot all about it. Therefore its existence doesn't bother me at all. There's lots of boards I don't follow.

Zargon03 Aug 2014 5:15 p.m. PST

Like you TwinMirror I studied art and get where your coming from that's why I hate any form of trite and trivial censorship, its not like were making it a XXX site its for those figures that do get made and do get painted buy enough people to have said board. Again if it offends you can switch it off.
Hmm I smell intolerance for the idea never mind the substance if you ask me.
And finally I personally very rarely even open articles on that board what's with the rest who have to feel the wrath of puritanical course through them?
Hell if Boobies gets the folk out with fire brands and pitchforks here wonder what would lead to a lunching?

Repiqueone03 Aug 2014 5:48 p.m. PST

Before you guys get all wrapped up in defending the world from censorship, I suggest you reflect a bit. No one is saying that there can't be a forum for figures of endowed female character figures. What we ar saying is that the title "More Boobies" is adolescent, offensive to many women, and decidedly sexist.

When one talks of great art and nudes, I can assure you no art museum, art school, or credible artist ever thinks of his art as "More Boobies". I even suspect that the sculptors who do the figures that appear on that forum might consider it belittling of their work.

To be very clear, No one is saying that either stifling or ignoring need be stopped, just stop the purposeless and silly list. No one is saying to stop posting Fantasy (and I do mean fantasy!) women figures, just show a little good sense in the forum title. We are saying that gratuitous recounting of sex and demeaning comments about women, and the circular Blue Fez are quite worthless and do nothing positive for this hobby or the forum.

This isn't about censorship, but good taste and reasonable courtesy. Some things simply do not belong on a wargaming site, and are only brought here for all the wrong reasons. It leads to many people being embarrassed by the silliness, even more people frustrated by such needless diversions from the topics that concern wargaming. Quite frankly, some arrested development bozo's needs to demonstrate his machismo and "manly" traits are just pathetic.

Decrying boorish bad taste and needlessly insensitive remarks is not intolerance. It does the hobby no good in either the short, or the long run, to put such behavior forward, and even though it can be ignored, that does not mean it is gone and that others, including people new to the hobby won't stumble on it.

We are all judged by those we associate with, and the hobby will be judged by those that are the loudest voices. If they be sensible, fun, informed and interesting people, the hobby will prosper. If they be salacious, insensitive, selfish, stupid, braggarts, fools, and can't fathom the offense they give to MANY others, then the hobby will suffer greatly. It already has.

Just Katie04 Aug 2014 6:18 a.m. PST

I've always taken the nmb board name to be entirely tongue in cheek and don't feel offended by it at all.

TwinMirror04 Aug 2014 6:27 a.m. PST

I agree, Zargon.

Repiqueone, seems like you either didn't read or intentionally misunderstood the meaning of my post.
Of course we should change the board's name; that's what I said!
A change of name may help refocus the board's direction – surely you are not opposed to nudes per se – or are you?

Repiqueone04 Aug 2014 9:56 a.m. PST

Not in the least, though I must admit I've never found much use for 28mm nude female figures in wargaming. It's not much of a uniform. The facing colors and turnbacks sorta blend together, and there's only one button and no pockets. I note they are all tailored the same with double breasted jackets as well. It does allow some savings on paint varieties, I suppose.

My response was primarily to Zargon's , not you, and included a wider critique of some obviously insensitive or divisive aspects of the forum.

Weasel04 Aug 2014 11:16 a.m. PST

Always sort of amusing to me that the notion of something being in poor taste will rally people to defend it merely on the basis of being in poor taste.

Though you can find a few in fantasy and sci-fi armies.

Smokey Roan04 Aug 2014 6:38 p.m. PST

I find the complainers, once they get what they want, then complain more, and demand more, then end up on Frothers, posting anti TMP threads

Sparker, and his demand for the "Ignore" feature, STILL had problems with posts and posters and thus left in dramatic fashion, being a great example.

The original "No American Sports Talk" folks from the Parlor got their wish, (the Blue Jockstrap Board), yet ALL of them, with like two exceptions, who ran away but didn't seek Frothers as a venue for their hatred) ran themselves out of here and are now on Frothers, ripping TMP as we speak.

Weasel04 Aug 2014 6:53 p.m. PST

Complaining about complaining. Have we reached a singularity?

Flatland Hillbilly04 Aug 2014 7:13 p.m. PST

I don't think Repiqueone is requesting TMP to censor these things; rather he is asking that it should be handled in a mature way. I can see much to be ganed from discussions about various "tropes" involving the female figure in terms of Fantasy, SciFi, Pulp, or VSF gaming. Miniatures gaming, after all, represents quite a large tent covering many facets beyond just historical recreations. It is interesting to see how mythological figures such as Amazons or Valkyries are handled in terms of physical form or whether the Sisters of Battle are a little "over the top" in 40K or how Pulp games handle women in various roles. Sometimes these various genres have some interesting quirks that are quite interesting and worthy of discussion.

In any case, I can see using a different term than NMB – it is worth considering a name change to present an image that is perhaps a little less "frat boy" in its connotations. YMMV.

Oy….

Smokey Roan04 Aug 2014 8:25 p.m. PST

So, let's give in to the whims of some squeaky wheels who will be on Frothers (if they are not already) badmouthing TMP for some other reason within the week.

Weasel04 Aug 2014 8:54 p.m. PST

Smokey – why would you see a democratic decision as "giving in" ?

If the majority of TMPers turn out to want it changed, then why should it not change?

Repiqueone04 Aug 2014 10:06 p.m. PST

The reason some people's wheels are squeaky is they actually touch the ground and turn now and then. I doubt if many are members of a Frothers or have posted there. Its a simple request from what, at the moment, appears to be 70 % of the voters, with 49% wanting a name change, and 21% simply wanting it gone. The "leave it as it is" group appears to be only about 25% of the board.

If it's renamed the Femmes Metale board, the contents will be the same, Smokey, it just won't be embarrassing to 70% of your fellow TMPers. It will just be one of several changes that could be made to improve TMP, which I'm sure many people, including the editor, might like to see.

I trust the system blocks sock-puppets?

britishlinescarlet204 Aug 2014 11:39 p.m. PST

Foe a moment let's just play devil's advocate. How would you feel if it was called "Needs more penis"? Seems a damn stupid name to me, might even be considered insulting. See what I'm doing there?

alien BLOODY HELL surfer05 Aug 2014 2:34 a.m. PST

'How would you feel if it was called "Needs more penis"? '

I'd wonder how you knew and where you saw those photos of me :-(

venezia sta affondando05 Aug 2014 4:04 a.m. PST

Yuk! Enough!

Britishlinescarlet2, and Ms Katie from earlier, your references to male privates just shows have vile this could all become.

Change the NMB Board name NOW!

christot05 Aug 2014 6:02 a.m. PST

I never even knew of the existence of this board until reading this thread, just passed me by.
So I had no idea what everyone was talking about.
What was on this board? I had no idea.
My immediate reaction was to think "For God's sake! typical TMP, as usual the oversensitive minority get up in arms concerning some zealous application of their narrow PC standards"

Then I looked at the board

Why is it called NMB?
What's the point?
I can't see any advantage to naming it thus
It's not a funny name

however, if it was changed by vote then it should be changed by vote again.
And that should be an end to it.

MarescialloDiCampo05 Aug 2014 6:28 a.m. PST

The whole discussion is funny. Who cares about the name NMB? Really – the Moral Majority – who is a squeaky clean moral minority, unable to accept that their "one" opinion can't rule the rest.
How many people who are offended by the NMB title have ever been in real life overseas in Europe or areas of Africa.
Walk past an Italian newsstand or poster or bill-board. Yep those are photos of anatomy, uncensored.
Walk into a real African village – topless abides there.
Go to a French, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, Croatian, Greek, Turkish, and elsewhere beaches – Wow public anatomy exhibited.
Whether the name changes or not…
1) there are nude figurines including D&D and Sci-Fi and Fantasy ones (I don't have any)
2) those that collect them should be able to have a forum for such
Go for the vote, yep block the people who disagree, become a single closed mind person, build your bomb shelter out in a forgotten hill away from society…

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP05 Aug 2014 6:34 a.m. PST

Campo, I don't think it is The Moral Majority that is trying to get the board renamed or eliminated.

Though I could be wrong. (But I could be right.)

TwinMirror05 Aug 2014 7:04 a.m. PST

Ok, Repiqueone, thanks for clearing that up. Looks like the board will be getting a name change now, which I think is beneficial.

I'm really glad the board isn't being removed – for the reasons DiCampo outlines above, and of course those I made earlier, but I am relieved that it will no longer carry a name that I'd have found silly even when I was a teenager!

Weasel05 Aug 2014 9:52 a.m. PST

That "minority" looks to be a majority btw.

The existence of breasts in the world does not change that it's a dumb name, and that's what people want changed.

I imagine if TMP was called the "Fat, old white dude page" people would find it ill advised, even if it was true.

Fergal05 Aug 2014 2:00 p.m. PST

I imagine if TMP was called the "Fat, old white dude page"

Now that's funny!

snurl106 Aug 2014 1:40 a.m. PST

Leave it the way it is. Don't read it if you don't like it.

Flecktarn06 Aug 2014 3:03 p.m. PST

It is not about being PC; it is about not coming across as sad, immature inadequates with poor dress sense, body odour and dreadful social skills.

Jurgen

Weasel06 Aug 2014 3:34 p.m. PST

Complaining about "PC" is usually slang for "I don't like that the world isn't catering to me"

alien BLOODY HELL surfer07 Aug 2014 2:23 a.m. PST

I find it funny there are people defending the name of the board etc and saying it's only the PC lot getting uppity about it, and stop being a prude, stop telling me what I can and can't say or see, yet the slightest hint of a cuss word or rude phrase, if not automatically snipped, is frowned upon and pointed out this is a family friendly site so stop it. The irony is fantastic, once again.

Weasel07 Aug 2014 9:42 a.m. PST

Alien – remember, posting videos of people being shot or blown up in a warzone is kid-friendly.

Saying a rude term for male genitalia will lead to a horrifying fate.
