"1/2400 Scrap Iron Flotilla and USS Juneau" Topic

A while back I stumbled on the story of a unit called the "Scrap Iron Flotilla." Naturally, any unit with a name like that was one that wanted modeling, and when I learned their history it was a done deal.

All five ships are Panzerschiffe models with the usual compliment of added parts.

Here the flotilla lies at anchor in the company of HMNZS Achilles.

Another ship in need of modeling was USS Juneau. The weird halfway finished repaint just screamed to be modeled, and of course her history is quite compelling. This is a superior model I came by a few years back and finally got around to painting this spring.

You need HMAS Stuart. I can't really tell if your Stuart is a different model? The Panzerschiffe D059 Antequera model is a Spanish copy of the Scott class. Different machinery but you can't see that.

They should be supported by HMAS Sydney L011

Stuart is the lead ship in the first picture. I was unaware of the Antequera, and thus used D-008 A-I class. It seemed close enough. You can see some differences: the guns have a gun shield on the model, where the V class destroyers are depicted with open mounts. (Which I believe is note entirely accurate. While they were not enclosed they had at least a modest gun shield, very much like those on the Scott leaders themselves.) The bridge on the models is also larger. (Also perhaps incorrect.)

Now that I'm aware of it I may go back and remodel Stuart, but all of the castings are a little off in one way or another, so I may let it slide and decide not to lose sleep over it. Thanks for the mention, though. Interesting catch and fascinating connection.

Sydney is on my acquisition list. May take a while, but I have sisters, so I can proxy her effectively for now.
