The second picture reminds me of a Life magazine article in the late 60's early 70's where the photojournalist went to Verdun to take pictures. He went into areas marked off limits to get pictures of trenches with dud shells laying scattered about, and dud grenade laying in the grass, the remains of a boot. All are humbling pictures.

Great pictures and good find Geoff! I liked the St Symphorien cemetery the best. It is a touching picture. At least the soldiers were laid to rest in a beautiful setting.

Having been to Verdun too, you start to notice the landscape changing even before you get there. We went by accident (looking for one place and found it instead) and you knew you were close to a battlefield simply by how the land looked. It was grass covered but easily recognizable that something horrific had happened there.

Great set of images. I would love to be able to see all of them now that I've seen this select few.
