I am war gaming many years mostly Feudal and Medieval periods(H.Y.W.) and i have used many rules FoG ,Tactica Medieval , Impetvs more recently. i enjoyed all but in the end the battles were very boring when you play wit both sides.Recently a friend told me that the best thing for my case would be Piquet rules Band of Brothers. Perfect for a solo war gamer any opinion or any help would be very welcomed |

Piquet's activation mechanisms are very suitable to solo play. Because it is not IGOUGO, rather units can only act when the appropriate card comes up and there is initiative pips to use the card, it allows you to generate some overall battle strategies for each side and then just let the cards dictate the flow of the battle. That is perhaps why many gamers do not like Piquet, but if you are trying to avoid the metagame problems where you move/fight both sides' forces with full knowledge of the others' plans, the card activation system is a great solution. |

Pulse of Battle are the newest set of rules for ancient/medieval from the producers of Piquet. They are a great set of rules and work in a very similar way to Piquet while avoiding the sometimes large swing in "impetus" that many people did not like. Their website is piquetwargames.com |

Thank you all very much for taking time to help me! I will have a look and check in detail all your suggestions because after many years i need a bit of interest and unpredictability in my games! But one more question i would like to ask would be if there are ways to add this as i said unpredictability to rules you are using already…?and if its worth it or these rules are designed in a way that you will probably ruin them if you add a extra factor..? |

Do you need to buy the Piquet Master rules as well as 'Pulse of Battle' or is it a stand alone ruleset? |

Nicholas, like Terrement I'm a fan of the TwoHourWargames rules. I reckon with a little thought you could graft the command and reaction system from "Rally Round the King" onto most ancient/medieval rules. I've not done it yet, but I've been toying with the idea of trying it with Impetus, for exactly the reasons you mention. |

I would also recommend piquet for solo play. I have to say that I ddn't get on with two hour wargames rules reaction system – I preferred the piquet style system. Mike |

I think Piquet is an excellent suggestion. |

Piquet is great for solo play. My two suggestions are buy Pulse of Battle it is a stand alone Ancient rules set no supplements needed. Secondly ask James Roach for a copy of his excellent Piquet based Crusader rules Ager Sanguinis. James can be contacted at Olicana Lad blogspot. Piquet systems are very adaptable. You cannot do better imho. |

If you want yo get a flavour of RRtK, I wrote a couple of posts on the setup at link I would also recommend the excellent reports of a long running RRtK campaign at talomir.blogspot.co.uk, and the TwoHourWargames are very friendly |
