I have had MA for a few years and have been busy building army lists for it while collecting minis for my 6mm project. I'm getting closer to actually playing now and during a recent re-read of the rules realized I'm confused about something.

If Monstrous (50x50 based) units count as two regular (50x25) units in a Group, it would seem then they would never be in the rear row and therefore could never be in a position to provide Support.

Yet the army lists have Monstrous units with Support values (and I've been merrily creating Monstrous units with Support too), so I must be missing something. Is it:

- Monstrous units can be in the rear row of a Group, so if the left of the screen is "forward", and Regular = R, Monstrous = M, you could have a "6-unit" Group like this:
RM
RM

or is it:

- Front line units not in contact with an enemy provide their Support value, NOT their Fighting value? I've checked over the discussions here, and between those and the rules it seems clear that front line units provide their Fighting values, irrespective of anything being in front of them. So if a Group of three Monstrous units in a line were hit by a single unit on the middle Monstrous unit, the Group's total is the sum of the three Monstrous unit's Fighting values. Or I am off and it's one Fighting value and two Supporting values?

Or is it something else completely?

Thanks,
Chris

It's unlikely that a monstrous unit will provide support, but there are a couple of occasions when it could happen.

Firstly, even though they are on double size bases (I play in 10mm, so mine are on 40x40 with regular units on 40x20) there is no reason they can't be in a second rank. They are considered as two units for the purposes of maximum number of units, 6, in a formation, so it'll always be 4 units + monster. You just can't have 5 regular units and a monstrous unit in a formation.

Secondly, if the monstrous unit is joining a formation by advancing to it from the rear it may have to join the second rank before the formation can reorganise to get it in the correct location:

AABBCC
DD

MM
MM

becomes

AABBCC
MMDD
MM

Thirdly, if attacked in the flank like this:

A---->BBMM
A---->CCMM

Where unit A is attacking a formation made up of units B and C with Monster M, Units B and C will be considered the "front line" and the monster as support.

All my interpretations, of course.

Thanks Goober – that helps. My interpretation of Monstrous units counting as two regular units in Groups also applied to the restriction on Groups on being two units deep, which would mean couldn't be in the second rank as that would make the Group three deep. So I was probably being too restrictive in that um, restriction.
