…Who Want To Breach Israel's Quarantine Of Gaza.

"Media report says activists – the same behind 2010's ‘Mavi Marmara' – scheduled to take off with Turkish military protection.

Amid Israel's Operation Protective Edge to stop Hamas attacks from Gaza, a "Freedom Flotilla" is being organized in Turkey to bring humanitarian aid to the Hamas-controlled Palestinian coastal enclave with the protection of the Turkish military, according to an unconfirmed media report.

The flotilla, called "Freedom Flotilla II," is being organized by the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), the same organization that was behind the Mavi Marmara flotilla that sought to break Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip in May 2010…"

I wonder if the humanitarian relief will have lots of guns like last time.

Hem, more targets.

Turkish fleet, Israeli fleet and the US 6th fleet. Two have practice sailing open waters and naval blockades…. the third rarely out of the Aegean sea. One has no problem defending their national interests (with or without the option of the world and UN if pressed), One has UN Veto and pays the bills. The third will lose any support in Europe and open itself to Russian intrigue.

Two phone calls should do.

The Turkish PM has been busy hacking off the Egyptians as well. I would be very surprised if wiser heads do not prevail.

From whom belongs the coast water near of Gaza?

I'm not sure, Armand. Israel could certainly control it, but I don't know the legal owner of that chunk of water.

Not really relevent. It's under Israeli blocade. Until nations crew their navies and man their armies soley with lawyers, legal is defined as "Might makes Right" and "Possession is nine-tenths of the Law".

cheers

Except that blockading a foreign power's ports inside their territorial waters is an act of war, and the Israelis generally try to avoid that…

Bangorstu29 Jul 2014 10:52 a.m. PST

Good idea. For a start the blockade is massively coutner productive.

For seocnd the Israelis need taking down a peg or two.

I'd love to see some evidence that the last cargo included any guns.

It did end up with the murder of some people though, and those crimes have not been unished.

In case you haven't noticed, a state of war does exist between the Palestinians and Israel. It's just that the violence at the current levels is not continuous, but rather punctuated by numerous ceasefires and temporary truces. The Pals use these breathing spaces to re-arm and then commence overt hostilities when the stockpiles of weaponry reach what they consider to be adequate levels. While the Pals definately qualify as "foreign" they do not qualify as a "power". The territorial integrity of a nation is only ensured by its ability to defend same. Otherwise it relies on the good graces of its neighbours to respect its borders (just ask the Phillipines how that's working out with China). In the case of the Pals, when you reach through the bars at the zoo and pull the whiskers of the tiger, common sense dictates that you shouldn't be surprised when it decides to rip your arm off.

As far breaking a blocade goes, this only works if the third party (ie Turkey) attempting it is sufficiently powerful to intimidate the blocading nation into letting their ships pass unmolested. Turkey is not that nation. Being bitchslapped on the high seas by the Israelis would be a huge humiliation (an important consideration in the middle east) and might well embolden the Greeks into doing something silly in the Aegean. Turkey will back down. Israel will not.

cheers

Nice to see you standing tall for the Collective. You managed to recite the talking points accurately as well. I'm sure your masters consider you to be quite precious. God Bless.

Bah, Erdogan continues his New Ottoman agenda. Israel and Turkey used to be close friends and Ergdogan has just flushed it all down the toilet in pursuit of re-portraying Turkey as an Islamic power.

Brilliant idea, especially given how well it worked out for them the last time…….

"It did end up with the murder of some people though"

Er, no it didn't. It ended with the shooting of people who were attempting to murder the shooters with knives, spears, iron bars and clubs

Let's say that a Royal Navy crew boarding a drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean was set upon by the smugglers with spears. The RN personnel then open fire on their attackers in line with their ROE. Would you describe the RN crew as 'murderers'?

"I'd love to see some evidence that the last cargo included any guns."

The 3,000 or so imported rockets that Hamas has fired this year would tend to support Israel's assertion that they need to maintain the blockade.

Got to agree with both your posts, Jemima …

Well, of course! Didn't you know that all military goons are nothing more than killers? [/Progressive unthink]

Jeez, I need to wash my brain with bleach after typing that… *gag*
