The concept of being a generous listener or a generous reader is that one assumes good will on the part of the speaker or writer, and gives them the benefit of any doubt. If more than one interpretation or meaning can be applied, generosity requires it be the best possible -- and certainly not the worst possible.

Having spent an hour or two reading the threads involving our editor, and the Frothers, and the assistant editors, and so forth, it seems to me that several posters are being exceedingly Ungenerous, putting the worst possible spin on to what Bill in particular has written.

It is of course possible to abuse generosity. I was unfamiliar with "concern trolls" but some of that does indeed seem to be happening.

As I read it, the editor is doing his best to protect his employees and maintaining his own integrity and restraint under severe provocation.

The Editor has a right to privacy. Leave him alone in his personal life. Not you Doc, but in general.

Somthing to do with TMP…..fine.

Everything else is out of bounds.

I am not a sock puppet for Mr. A. In fact, many things he does puzzle me and I have disagreed with him more than I ever agreed with him.
But the man has a right to keep private whatever he wishes to. Period.

So if I post something on this board and then declare I want it to be private does that prevent you from ever referring to it?

Cheers,

The Bandit

I guess you missed this.
If you post about it, then it's fair game.

Bandit, really, enough.

Just keep in mind the Golden Rule, you should be OK.

doc mcb,

Bandit, really, enough.

?

Bill,

Just keep in mind the Golden Rule, you should be OK.

That is perfectly fair, I'm just thinking that something that is posted online is persistent, so the notion that I can just ask everyone to treat public information as private… doesn't make sense. After I post something in the newspaper how can I claim it is private?

Cheers,

The Bandit

Bandit, you keep picking at it. Just drop it, please.

Does it matter? Just respect the person's wishes.

Bandit26 Jul 2014 6:59 p.m. PST

doc mcb,

You started a thread on a topic, then you're telling me not to post responding to something said in that thread.

Bill,

Does it matter? Just respect the person's wishes.

I don't believe I am disrespecting anyone's wishes not to talk about something they've claimed was private.

Cheers,

The Bandit

Yes, I am asking you please to heed the POINT of the thread by giving others the benefit of the doubt. You are not a prosecuting attorney.

Bandit26 Jul 2014 7:09 p.m. PST

Yes, I am asking you please to heed the POINT of the thread by giving others the benefit of the doubt. You are not a prosecuting attorney.

There is a difference between presuming positive intent (which is the "POINT" of the thread) and accepting contradictory actions and statements without question.

To question is not to disrespect. To question is to seek to better understand. You appear to think that I'm posting things for a reason other than a desire for good, in that you're failing your own standard but I don't think that is your intent.

Cheers,

The Bandit

If everyone cared about the well being of all around them, stranger or not, in strange lands or at home, what answers would satisfy? If any of you had witnessed anyone in need, did you step in and fight or at least contact the authorities?

Everyone has the right to satisfy their curiosities but not at the expense of those trying to make their way in life and that have done no harm. It would be nice to see everyone take in consideration the well being of those secondary to the object of your scorn.

Who has been harmed since the hiring of the assistant editors? Why are some so uncomfortable? The object of your scorn will be looking back at you in your bathroom mirrors. Nothing has occurred that would keep this site from being a great resource for the silly hobby we share. Nothing.

If something is unbearably objectionable to you to the point of thinking its illegal, man up and fight or contact the authorities. Be the good man. If you are just uncomfortable then I suggest an inward search to become comfortable and accepting for your own good. To enjoy those we have around us we must enjoy ourselves. Relax. Be accepting, learn and enjoy. We have a great and all encompassing hobby to live with if nothing else. We are lucky.

I sometimes wish I was from one of those cultures that had a nice almost onomatopoeic word for exasperation, like the Chinese or the Jewish.

Bandit, this post is a rat-trap and you've been caught!

You should have read the OP as the directive that it is and NOT as a point for discussion and you'd have been fine.

I don't know where doc mcb is coming from on this one frown

The horse has already bolted.

doc mcb27 Jul 2014 4:15 a.m. PST

I think Mark understands where I am coming from. Bandit seems obsessed with winning a debate that nobody else even wants to have.

Bandit, if we say "you win" will you drop it?

Bandit27 Jul 2014 7:03 a.m. PST

Drop what? What are you even talking about any more?

Cheers,

The Bandit

In my opinion,

Behaviour where one pushes things to the limit is the same thing as rules lawyering. I would hate to play with someone who behaves that way.

To do it in an extremely passive aggressive manner is the sign of someone who gets sociopthic enjoyment from getting under people's skin. I have encountered people like this and they enjoy "playing the restraints of civilization" ie they would like to be able to perform violence but get around it without actually performing violence.

Most of us can identify that kind of behaviour as I have done here. And I have done it without breaking for rules.

Guf (being passive aggressive himself)
