The first mention of Vikings in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is for the year 793 when they sacked the monastery at Lindisfarne. Still, perhaps news didn't get around fast in those days.

The first mention is in AD787 on Weymouth beach. Still a bit after 723 though :D
