Some games are pretty generic, others are intended for a specific scale of miniatures.

Does that deter you if you don't play that scale or do you just adapt the game?

No.

No. I can always change it to fit my needs.

Dave Crowell22 Jul 2014 12:00 p.m. PST

Not at all. Either I play it in the "standard" scale or I make adaptations. A base is a base however many models are mounted upon it, and changing measurement increments is simple maths.

Nope. Agreeing with Dave Crowell, the best thing about scale is it is easy to scale.

No. Being a 28mm player I was deters by the Battlegroup series for a few months. But I am really glad it only deterred me for a few months, since we love it in 28mm!

That's oddly unified for TMP :)

Definitely doesn't deter me. I play Mech Attack (a 15mm ruleset) in 10 and 28mm.

I find that it's easy to modfiy the scale of a given game, but often modifying the size or scope is asking for trouble.

Not since I learned about scaling things in grade school

Sometimes. Most of my collection is 6mm, so if the only way I can make the mechanics work is by lots of counters and/or rosters, then I often end up not giving the game a go.

Are there any games that can only be used with a specific scale?

ordinarybass22 Jul 2014 2:29 p.m. PST

Timbo,
Technically I don't think so, but there are some limitations especially when moving to larger size models.

A ruleset written for large 6mm battles might be difficult to play in 28mm except on a very large table.

I'm with Timbo. Just cuz it says "for 15mm" on the cover how would dropping in 28mm figures change much? You might need change your measurements if it's a game where unit footprints (e.g. vehicles) matter, otherwise it's a silly notion…

I have stuck with specific rules for long periods of time (decades) playing them as-is or with loads of mods.

I would think the only thing that can become a bit problematic for going to other scales has to do with basing versus individual figures.

Rules that specify individual figure removal can get fiddly with small figures, as can measuring stuff when it ends up being measured in mm or less increments. You can play them, but sometimes they need some changes and sometimes lose their charm in the process.

I have found very few rules which don't work with any size of figure, regardless of what they may specify. As Whirlwind says, there may be the odd exception depending on mechanics used.

You might need change your measurements if it's a game where unit footprints (e.g. vehicles) matter,

I've found that "inches" rules for 28-54mm games work well as "centimeters" games in 20-15mm. No math required. In fact, I have started playtesting my "28mm inches" games with a "15mm centimeters" portable travel board I have set up.

Bad Squiddo Games23 Jul 2014 9:43 a.m. PST

Yes. Purely because I haven't made the step out of 28mm yet, apparently it hurts the first time but you get used to it after that.

All quiet on the Martian Front is definitely waggling it's luring finger at me to try 15mm…

Annie.

I have over the years adapted rules meant for X size to other sizes if I really liked the rules and felt it was possible. so no rules stated for specific sizes/scales do not determine unless it is something I just do not collect.

Oh … also Rulers of the World (used to? still?) makes custom scale rulers which could easily be used to measure if you want to scale wargame rules.

Shaun Travers26 Jul 2014 7:08 a.m. PST

I have had a go at re-scaling a lot of ancient miniature rules. The fact that rules were designed for one scale and I am using another does not deter me at all. In fact, for ancients, I have used rules for single basing, or fairly different basing, to match all the figures I have that are based on 40mm wide width.

It is getting to the point I almost see it as a challenge to get the rules to work with WRG basing.
