I finally got around to painting a DBA army of Magister Militum early Franks, purchased from a TMP supporting member. Painting all those stripes – yikes. I looked around online to see what people do for Frankish shields. Some do monochrome, all brown or other earthy color. Some do what looks like dark age Saxon/Viking type of shields, geometric patterns, etc. What do you gents suggest for my little shields? on an unrelated note, the hair styles of these guys brings distinctly un-Frankish ideas to mind. Some of them look like Rick James' hair do, which had me humming "Super Freak" while painting. Others have a hair style vaguely like a Sikh turban, and the wearers are bearded. Makes me want to call a cab. (Many Sikh cab drivers in NYC). |

I guess that's a starter for design ideas. Not specifically on shield designs but the Frankish were traditionally fond of the radial arc. |

Hmm, thank you. Looks like I've got some work ahead. |

Here is a stelae from the Migration Era portraying a Western Germanic horseman with the curvilinear shield motif.

He specified early Franks. Does that mean Carolingian (horseman relevant) or Merovingian (almost all warband infantry with strange hairstyles, for whom the well-known stele may not be relevant)? Not an expert on the period; just noting that "early" is subject to variable interpretation. |
