Without getting political

I have two main visions in my head – the National Guard in Rambo, and the Border Patrol in MiB. So for gaming purposes, I'm thinking National Guard vs.

*The Federales
*The Mexican Army
*Pissed off Apaches
*Aliens (a la MiB)

You could game the old movie"Viva-Max",w/Peter Ustinov. When Mexican army personal take over the Alamo and Johnathon Winters heads up the guard to retake it.What rules would one use?

The Virginia National Guard did fine at Omaha Beach.
And the Pennsylvania National Guard held out for 2 days at 10:1 odds in the Battle of the Bulge. SAVING THE DAY!!!!!

I think the Texicans will do all right.

Remember some B-grade 1970s? movie about two National Guard units that kept fighting and killing each other in a southern swamp … go on, for the honour of Dogpatch County or the the Louisiana National Guard!

… or a drug cartel trying to stop a DEA task force from moving some captive drug cartel members from a Mexican jail to the US border. The DEA is supported by a couple of Navy SEALs and a Mexican National Guard unit (that unknown to the DEA, is in league with the cartel and will aggressively turn on the DEA halfway to the border).

National Guard vs separatist militia?

I kinda have this urge to write a tongue-in-cheek campaign for the second american civil war, between the communist north and the theocratic south

@ FoxtrotPapaRomeo
Was the "Southern Comfort" ? But I remember it was National Guard vs Cajuns (red neck hillbilly stereotype, in a swamp)

National Guard vs separatist militia?

Or even National Guard vs National Guard. Control of pipelines lead to Texas NG facing Louisiana NG. Perhaps Texas will eventually become sick of Oklahoma putting on airs and pretending that their favorite child Chuck Norris is a Texan. Or unrest in New Mexico spilling across into Texas.

Cincinnatus23 Jul 2014 8:45 a.m. PST

Keep in mind today's NG isn't your father's NG or the one from those B grade movies.

379,736 National Guardsmen have deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, along with 285,718 reservists (2001-2010)…

In the decade of conflict that followed September 11, 2001, 63 percent of the National Guardsmen deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan have deployed once, while 37 percent have deployed multiple times, according to National Guard Bureau data.

Texas maintains 26,000 National Guardsmen (Army and Air NG). The Texas Adjutant General made a combat deployment mandatory for all field grade officers to get promoted back in 2011.

Look at the deployment figures cited for 2008 comparing Guard, Reserve, and Active component. Link:http://fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RS22451.pdf

With the draw down of the active force, national guard units are filling out with experienced combat veterans from the active duty forces.

On Dec. 18 when the final U.S. troops crossed the Iraqi border into Kuwait, the National Guard had deployed more than 250,000 Guard members in support of the war.

The 36th Infantry division brigades have done both Iraq and Afghanistan within past 3 years. The 36th ID Division HQ deployed to command USD-South in Basra Iraq from Dec 2010-2011.

I would pit the 36 ID against the Mexican forces, and the Texas guard would win.

Today's National Guard and Army Reserve are not the B grade movie version and haven't been for more than a decade. Most of those units could take on and win vs most armies that the rest of the world can muster. They are better trained, equipped and have recent combat experience.

That said go for a drug cartel, sounds fun.

It is noticeable that university and college students don't throw stuff at the NG any more. Or sit down in their way.
