After watching the film Zulu, and reading a few books on the zulu war, i want to game it!

I need a decent set of rules.

What rules do you use for zulus?

Let me know
Thank you so much

Battles for Empire for large battles.

Yes, The Sword and the Flame.

The Sword and the Flame was specifically devised originally for the Zulu Wars. Larry Brom and his play testers spent many a game assaulting or defending Rorke's Drift. My good war gaming buddy declared that he proved he could lose both as the British and the Zulus. You can order it from Larry at sergeants3.com .

There is even a "one-sided" version where the umpire runs the Zulus against all the British players.

VnB certainly works fine as well.

Been using The Sword and the Flame since 1979, still do. That's the only set of rules I've never left for another. Must be love?…

Mine were designed for fighting the Zulu war, and can be freely downloaded from link

Look for the Colonial rules.

Wow
the sword and the flame really has some fans!

Is it complex? That's the number one thing… if I can't figure it out without being taught, it won't be worth my time..

Could somebody give me a generic rundown of how your suggested rules work? Dice? Cards? Igougo? Non-rigid?

Let me know

Thanks for everything so far
Austin

You might want to look at Two Hour Wargames' "Colonial Adventures".

Sword & the Flame… Go Zulus!!

The Sword and the Flame rules are "old school" but easy to learn and lots of fun. If you want to do a really large battle like isandlwana Battles for Empire is the way to go.

No one has mentioned Black Powder? I am basing my figures with the intention of using BP, should I reconsider?

I have played The Sword & the Flame since about 1980 and now pretty much defer to the 20th Anniversary Edition (with a few mods and tweaks and clarifications/expansions). If you can get an experienced player to introduce them to your gaming group, you'll pick them up very quickly and painlessly.

TSATF is a skirmish game. If you want the grand sweep of battle with artillery, Gatling guns, and rockets, I recommend BfE.

I recently read on another TMP thread that TSATF was designed with the NW Frontier in mind.

If you are going to use BP for the Zulu War, then the following change is recommended:
"British infantry had their shooting and melee stats swapped. So now they roll 6 dice for shooting and 3 for melee."

Winston Smith22 Jul 2014 11:34 a.m. PST

TSATF uses units of 10-20 individually based figures.
Movement and shooting are not simultaneous but card based.
So you have to make plans based on not knowing when you will move.
European troops are "steadier" than natives.
Rifles are rifles with no anal differentiation.
The rules are simple enough to be almost generic but reward planning.

TSATF…great set of rules, good ratio of figures. Games can be as big or as small as you like…BP is alright, just feels better for Nap's. BP is for larger battles with 1 figure representing 10's of figures sometimes more…I like the 1:1 feel of TSATF better…rules are easy to learn.

ScottS24 Jul 2014 9:41 p.m. PST

Black Powder also has a supplement for the Zulu War called, er, Zulu.
