I was vaguely thinking of dumping my late WW1 20mm stuff and replacing it with 15mm, I shall ponder that one. My early war stuff is 15mm already.

artaxerxes20 Jul 2014 12:08 a.m. PST

RCW for me, which is like 1914-15 with a few technological updates but not too many. haven't decided on a rules set yet.

Not likely….more chance of Luis Suarez refusing a neck to bite

Norman D Landings20 Jul 2014 1:59 a.m. PST

Our group at the club is doing early war in 10mm, using Pendraken figures and Great War Spearhead.

Very good fun it is, too.

yoakley20 Jul 2014 2:10 a.m. PST

i plan to buy the WI mag with the WW! supplement then dig out my airfix ww1 20mm bits.

DontFearDareaper Fezian20 Jul 2014 2:54 a.m. PST

We are planning on dusting off our old GDW "Over the Top" rules and playing in 15mm.

WW1 in East africa

Sundance20 Jul 2014 6:28 a.m. PST

I'm looking at doing it a little later in the year – been rereading Infantry Attacks.

Mick in Switzerland20 Jul 2014 6:37 a.m. PST

I have started a WW1 project, with scenarios based on sections of major battles such as Mons, Verdun, the Somme (British & French sectors) and also Cambrai with tanks.

I think that the WW1 battles are more interesting at a bigger scale than squad against squad so was thinking of using Rapid Fire. This way, I could field say 10 tanks and a lot of infantry. To keep the costs down,I decided on the Pendraken 10mm range. So far, I have 60 infantry, 3 HMG, 3 Artillery guns for British and Germans. I also have 2 X MkIV male, 3 x MkIV Female and 1 x A7V. I will add more artillery and mortars at some point. (I have some WW2 items as substitutes). I am thinking of making a 3ft square terrain board with trenches cut into foam.

Scroll for other 1914 games in 15mm. All Peter Pig figures.

KSmyth20 Jul 2014 7:20 a.m. PST

I am seriously thinking about it. I have a lot of unpainted Peter Pig and Minifigs for both sides, late war. Have no idea about rules or much of anything else, but talking about it with friends.

I'm actually really excited it's 1918 with stormtroopers and tanks that could break a trench line.

Vimy Ridge20 Jul 2014 7:35 a.m. PST

I have been doing WWI for years now and have figs in 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 28mm and 54mm. Figs range from the Balkan Wars through to late RCW. I use different rules but generally I play Great War Spearhead, INEPTT (for weird WWI games). For the 54mm I use a very simple system which is more Kriegspiel than anything else.

Dave Crowell20 Jul 2014 7:45 a.m. PST

Yes, but I have been for years now anyway.

wrgmr120 Jul 2014 8:05 a.m. PST

Yes, we've been doing WW1 for years as well.

I'll be ramping my project up again. Now that GWSH2 is out and soon they will have a boatload of scenarios! 10mm for me. It gives a good mix of being able to tell what the figures are and a decent looking ground scale. I'll do 20mm for skirmish type actions but probably not till next year.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP20 Jul 2014 12:14 p.m. PST

We do WW1 Spearhead, and WW1 Wings of Glory, so yes!

doug redshirt20 Jul 2014 12:20 p.m. PST

I am finishing up my game on the the first two months of the war on the Western Front using 10mm figures. Corps size units to represent all the combatants and the entire front from the Channel to the Alps. Hopefully I will have it ready in time for Recruits in two months.

Next year the Eastern front in 1914. That will be a neat one to make work.

wrgmr120 Jul 2014 12:59 p.m. PST

kyote – those are Old Glory 25/28mm figs. Painted up as Canadians and of course Germans.
Russ Dunaway was at Enfilade a few years ago and really liked this game so much he gave me two free bags of figures.

Our group, the Jackson Gamers, does WW1 German East Africa using 20mm individually mounted figures and a variant of The Sword and the Flame rules.

I've been thinking about it for a few years; I might pull the trigger this year.

I have a few hundred 28mm British and Germans, all painted and ready to go.

No one in my area is interested.

This is a game I put on at Our local Salute convention in 2010. It was a gas attack by the Germans on Canadian lines.

I do Italians against AustroHungarians using 18mm Blue Moon stuff, with the French painted as Italians and Germans painted as AH. Homemade set of rules, very bloody. Figs mounted 3 to a stand for rifles and then support weapons mounted with crews. No tanks.

Tgunner21 Jul 2014 7:28 p.m. PST

I wonder ithe Blue Moon stuff matches up with Martian Front?

Battle Front totally has me. I love WWI tanks so it's 1918 all the way for me. I've gotta have Patton in his FT-17!

Appreciate things have moved on from this discussion, but, don't forget, TSS have started producing WW1 figures and scenery – 1914 Belgian, French and some British and Germans too.

Yes, I'm in! Great War Spearhead II in 6mm. link

Problem is I've only just discovered the ruleset a couple of months ago and the pace of painting is not keeping up with the pace of the centenary milestones! Nearly got there for Mons centenary – just ran short of terrain. WIP!

Have some naval actions in the Indian Ocean/Pacific/South Atlantic ready to go, though.

Great stuff everyone is doing – thank for the pics.

Been playing WW1 for a few years now, but I think this year we will mainly do RCW. Some of our games & pix over here:

I played our modified version of Squarebashing 1 again ob Thursday – Mons scenario with a minor British win. TtMatB planned for the autumn.

jameshammyhamilton30 Aug 2014 8:00 a.m. PST

I played a little WWI a looooooong time ago using a set of rules written by the president of my local games club I quite enjoyed the games at the time but have had no real draw towards WWI gaming since and the offering from Battlefront is definitely not something that will pull me in.

I have seen some pictures of nicely painted miniatures (even if the German helmets look more than a little weird), hopefully those who do take the plunge will have a good time.

stew46a30 Aug 2014 1:27 p.m. PST

Peter pigs new Square bashing rules are great and so is the range of figures they do.

I believe you'll find that Patton walked along side of his tanks, using a walking stick to tap on the sides of them and to give them orders. This is how he was wounded by a German Machinegun.

Of some interest perhaps is that this walking stick was made from the first tree knocked down by a US tank in France. The tip of the stick was an emptied out 37mm shell casing. I saw this walking stick just yesterday at the Patton Museum.

We've been playing WW 1 skirmish games for years. Our club got interested when somebody in the group introduced us to Old Glory's 'Trench Wars' rules. The games have evolved from late-war Western Front trench scenarios to Early War Eastern Front (Germans v. Russians) with lots of cavalry.

mashrewba01 Sep 2014 1:12 p.m. PST

I want to pause for a moment to remember the greatest WW1 figures ever.

Capt Flash18 Oct 2014 5:19 a.m. PST

Our group used GW's The Great War in 28mm. I have since sold off my entire collection but want to do WW1 in either 15mm or 10mm.
I also have the Over The Top expansion.
I do want to find a multi-base set of rules though.
I'll check out reviews of the above mentioned sets and see what fits..

I have been building WW1 in 20mm for over a year now, custom-built trenchworks finally got it finished link then I got around to the figures link and link then last of all the tanks link

I did the Minifig 15mm ages ago when they first came out but got stuck in the early (1914) period and never did any more.

Alan Lauder18 Oct 2014 11:20 a.m. PST

I agree, Mashrewba. The old Airfix WWI range where where it all started for me – 40 odd years ago!
