In DBMM the Polybian list allows for the Romans to have extraordinarii as Auxiliary (S) so looser order than the heavy roman and allied foot. What would these chaps have looked like ? Any suggestions for 28mm figures that may suit these fellows? Cheers |

They were picked men from the allied legions, so they would have looked identical to the legionaries or, perhaps, unreformed Italians (Samnites, Bruttians etc). Personally, I can't see why they aren't Bd like the rest. Maybe a grade better, Bd(S) or (O), depending on whether the allies are fielded as Bd(O) or (I). They are picked men after all. |

Thanks Sondergaard. So if. I wanted them to look different to the main battle line would I be too far out to use say Aventine Volscian hill tribes or Late Etruscan? Cheers |

They'd probably be fine dragonfan. However, I'd wait for a few more replies before committing. I'm an enthusiastic amateur rather than a military historian and others have more knowledge of the subject than me. But the above is my take on it and I haven't seen anything recently that changes my mind. |

Thanks guys, I've just bought some of the Agema plastics and picked up a few painted Old Glory Hastatai and Roman Cavalry so just embarking on this period.I've dusted off my trusty Goldsworthy, Bishop and Coulston and Sumner so plenty of research ahead! I do like the Aventine figures they are excellent.Hopefully I can sneak some in there somewhere! Cheers |

Instead of the Aventine's Volscian hill tribes, I'd use the Italian Allied figures, which I believe are the same armor type as the Etruscan spearmen (check out Etr006a and b for ones advancing (though they sell them in the unit deals as UD2 and UD3- have armor of many types). Assuming that they were mainstream Italians of the time, they probably have the Italian style armor, large shield, and throwing spear (which I think their light pilum would work for this – the one with a longer metal shaft – not the heavier one we all know). If you can wait just a bit, you should also check out Victrixlimited.com's site for their Allied Latins coming out probably within two months. Beautiful and probably more affordable. The Romans fought the Volscians WAY before the Polybian army came about (400's BC and maybe on a little more.) I think even before the Samnite Wars they had put the Volscian problem to rest. So I think that's a style that wouldn't be around much in the Polybian era. |

Thanks for the info Mars, I have looked at the Victrix pics and they do look good.Probably a good time to be starting Polybian and Carthaginian armies with the new plastics out and/or coming.Cheers |

Agema Miniatures do a pack of figures called something like "Legionary Characters" These are in very dynamic poses so might do nicely for the more active, elite role of the Extraordinarii.
