When I was a young lad I remember reading a book from the local library, which I believe was written by Featherstone. It was a series of short stories each one chapter long telling of the experiences of various soldiers throughout history.
Some of the stories included a Roman legionary, a trooper from Rush's Lancers in the ACW, and a squadie at the battle of Monte Cassino I think and several others I have forgotten.
I have been trying to discover the name of this book so I might try to obtain a copy.
If anyone knows of the book I'm referring to and the title I would be grateful.

The Universal Soldier?
There was a colour plate of each protagonist--if I remember rightly there was a 95th Rifles private for the Peninsula War, a panzergrenadier in Russia, and a British paratrooper at Arnhem.

Forrester.
Thank you, that sounds like the one (don't know where I got the Monte Cassino one from).
Yes they did have a colour plate and for a lad they were very inspiring.
Thank you again.

Update.
PS don't some searching can't seem to find a copy anywhere, I'll keep looking.

Could it instead have been The fighting man by Brigadier Young?

I have a very similar memory of reading one of these (unsure which it was.) Both are on Amazon at reasonable prices, so I picked up both!

I've searched Amazon and Ebay (UK) for 'Universal Soldier', no joy on either. I'm pretty sure that's the book. A big book about A4 size if memory serve well, not one of his smaller standard books.
Thanks for your help.

@Crumple:
Not by Featherstone then.

The Universal Soldier – 14 Studies in Campaign Life

One of my favourite books ever – I read it as a kid and then paid big bucks to get another copy about 10 years ago

@MajorB:
You are right. There are many books not by Featherstone, this is just one of them.

I have a copy of this excellent book, and I'm willing to sell it. I'll place an ad in the Marketplace section as soon as I get a chance.

Thank you Crumple for the link, I just ordered one.
Indeed not by Featherstone, my bad, in my memory that were linked, but thanks again :-)
And thanks everyone else, I'm looking forward to a trip down memory lane.

Sounds very similar to 'Declarations of War' by Len Deighton…

After more digging, it turns out the book I was thinking about is The Story of Knights and Armor by Ernest Edward Tucker.
