So, in my FLGS I found a six-sided die with a '3' on each face. Naturally, I was consumed with a desire to own such a marvel. But, aside from "slightly below average" die, I have yet to find a non-nefarious purpose for it.

[Yes, I could slip it into an opponent's dice pile-but should they then lay claim to it-I would be forced to admit to skullduggery.]

Any suggestions?

So it's a D1? Cool.

Clearly it's an 'average' generator. It's actually a very convenient thing to have, you can just role it once per game. Big time saver.

It allows you to keep your 2d6 groove when rolling d6+3.

As an alternate die for "best of" die roll rules (gives a minimum, but reduces odds of higher rolls).

… or "worst of" rolls, "discard lowest", "pair matching" rolls (a la Risk).

Pictogram generator. The three spots are in a straight line, so roll five and you get a pattern of short lines.

Random triangle shape deployment generator. (as above)

Wind direction generator (again, using the straight line concept)

It would be great of Oh God, Anything But A Six!.

Useful in QILS, also.

Forest generator … look at all the t'rees!

Elevation marker when you are not using elevation rules.

Anniversary reminder die. Make sure you get married on March third.

The Hero RPG system had a optional rule in which you could pick some, or all of your dice of an attack to be averaged. So if you had a 8d6 attack you could average 4 dice, so that your dice range would now be 16 – 40 instead of 8 – 64. A nice feature if you are inflected by dice hatred (meaning your rolls turn out like the dice hate you) so you have a higher minimum roll.

Those dice would be very useful for that.
