Just curious to see if anyone has seen, or bought the new Traveller T5 RPG rulebook yet, since I'd like to know what people think of it, and if it has chapters and/or an index to aid in finding specific info?

Also, curious to read opinions on how people think it compares to the original little Traveller Black Books?

I saw it – impressive piece of work, but it is more reminiscent of a conglomeration of the original three books, with added material, than of the more complete Books 4 through 8. Mind you, I didn't do a thorough look-through as I was gaming with some friends, but at least I got a look at it. I think it's $50 USD or $60 USD? I still like the original LBBs, plus I've invested in the two original hardcovers.

Not my words, for what it's worth.

I was a beta tester since way back and I love the idea in principle, so bear that in mind.

The mess is exaggerated, it's just a huge book so it's a huge mess. It got rushed out due to kickstarter issues and that caused even more problems.

It is functional and playable, I've used it. But it can be extremely frustrating trying to find stuff like military medals from risk and reward rolls.

My advice would be to wait. But if it's just so awesome that you can't wait, keep in mind that the referee should alter the rules when they don't seem to work right. I've built guns, vehicles, armor, and starships but I haven't messed much with words or aliens. The T5 forums at Citizens of the Imperium have links to apps and stats for the major aliens, ships, vehicles, and weapons, none of which were in the core book. On the other hand there's pictures of them just no stats, which I must say is the worst of all possible worlds. Still they do exist and can be found on the website.

I'm torn on that T5 is clearly a throwback to the LBBS in its thinking, there's an Imperium out there, roll up some worlds and get trading.

Some will hate it and that's okay Traveller is many things to many different people. For myself a huge tool box of possibities and six digit summary codes (now more mmonics than all editions of Traveller combined!) is like catnip it's fantastic.

If you're looking for the Third Imperium book with data on every world, maps of every sector, stats on every alien that ever appeared anywhere, with art that makes Games Workshop crawl under a rock. You won't like this book. You won't like the TV show they're doing either. I do hope we see that book and I hope the TV show grows into something great over time.

But what I really want is multipart plastic minis and model kits and wargame rules.

Well I think that page 366 holds the secrets of the Universe.

Well, it answers the question anyhow, the full color one (on the CD maybe?)is better.

I started out with the LBB's and have slowly 're-built' my collection with bargains off of EBay and such…..nothing else seems 'Traveller'…….

Thanks for all the replies.

From the links provided, it appears that the short-comings of T5 have been noted, and there are plans afoot to deal with them. No date of delivery is provided.

My question wasn't about the 500+ page tome, but about the new, somewhat streamlined rulebook, which is apparently a bit smaller – containing just the rules to play the game, without some of the added fluff.

Not sure what is included, and what is omitted, so am curious to hear opinions of it.

David Johansen09 Jul 2014 4:56 p.m. PST

It should be pretty solid but we don't really know what it will contain yet. T5 is pretty dependant on the various benchmark structures for things like range and target size so I think that stuff will be in, characters combat, equipment, ships, starship combat maybe.

Or do you mean the streamlined Mongoose Traveller based game from the Germany company?

Mako1112 Jul 2014 3:05 p.m. PST

I see.

I thought it had already been released.

No, I believe I'm talking about the supplement/follow-on book, which is supposed to be a streamlined variant, just containing the basic rules/references for the T5 version of Traveller. I saw it mentioned on the Traveller COTI blog/website.

David Johansen12 Jul 2014 7:59 p.m. PST

Nah, the new special committee is still hashing out combat.
