Are the collectible pre-painted minis (esp. clix) hand painted or are they sprayed by factory automata? |

They're painted in China by kids making less than a buck a day. |

And here I thought pixies and nixies painted them. |

I second the OFM's nomination, only with the PLA in place of the Red Army. |

They're painted by the children caught by this guy.

That's what I was afraid of. Then again, I'm painting alot of crap for free. |

Actually, the Army is primarily focused on producing consumer electronics like DVD players and toasters. In my experience (having visited many such factories), the typical Chinese handwork factory employee is a young woman, 20-30 years of age from a farming family, born at least 100 miles from the coast. |

Not making excuses but the Chinese have a long history (thousands of years) of using their military as free labour. |

In my last trip to China (2003) my tour group went through some of these sweat shops where kids painstakingly and time-consumingly make 'art' for tourists. They have to pretend they're enjoying their work and smile. I am not kidding. |

My guess is that it is a variant on inkjet printer technology. Pretty sure it is used in model railroad 'prepaints', don't see why it can't apply here. |

What is a "pre-painted" figure as compared to a "painted " figure. Is a pre-painted figure painted by someone other than the owner? Third party painting? If I send my figures to Fernando, are they then pre-painted? If the maker sends them directly and then I get them, are they pre-painted. Are Britains 54mm toy lead figures pre-painted? I thought pre-painted figures were those that came out of the casting moulds already painted. |

Bobgnar, no. There is no such thing as a figure that comes out of the mold painted. Paint is a layer of color added to an existing substrate. Prepainted means something that you purchase in retail packaging that has been painted by the manufacturer. |
