This project actually began as an exercise in getting better at making curved surfaces in Sketchup, but it eventually became more focused on making actual vehicles. My dad was a long-haul trucker for years, and I'm probably one of the few people who both knows all the words to the C. W. McCall song "Convoy" and who also knows what they all mean! As part of my curved-surfaces exercise, I decided to Sketchup some 6mm-scale futuristic trucks (a.k.a. lorries for our British friends), busses, and other civilian vehicles. Since civilian vehicles in a wargame are little more than mobile terrain pieces or an objective to fight over (Side A is trying to capture them whilst Side B attempts to prevent same), I decided to name this line of vehicles my "Maguffin Motors" line. Most of the inspiration for these came from concept truck sketches found around the Web. Here is a group shot:
And the rest can be found here on my blog-o'-war: link Thanks! jav98 |

Holy cow
that pic is huge. I need to learn better how to use Blogger. Sorry, all. |

Those vehicles are very good! Do you plan to sell them? |
javelin98 | 02 Jul 2014 4:42 p.m. PST |
Yeah, I'll probably upload them to Shapeways pretty soon. Luckily, I've gotten enough experience now with Sketchup and Shapeways that nearly everything I design should be printable (no internal walls, below-minimum wire/wall thicknesses, etc.). |

These are awesome! Just what I need to flesh out my new city board. I will be keeping an eye on your shapeways store. Any chance of a similar set of smaller civilian vehicles in the future? |
javelin98 | 02 Jul 2014 8:07 p.m. PST |
You mean like sedans, coupes, wagons, and such? I could probably do that! I was just musing about doing a Spinner from Blade Runner
|
DOUGKL | 02 Jul 2014 8:08 p.m. PST |
Nice looking stuff. They are something I would be interested in. |

Yes please!!! Sedans, coupes etc. are exactly what I meant, I'm just really envious of all the cool stuff that has been released for 15mm lately I guess ;-) |

Good looking stuff
..just right to populate my growing spaceport

Great vehicles, I'll pick them up when they're available and I do another Shapeways order (I try to buy a bunch of things at once to save on shipping/customs). Would also like the smaller civilian stuff too. |

Do you think the designs would scale down to 3mm? |
UrbanWulf | 04 Jul 2014 10:32 a.m. PST |
I'd also be interested in getting a load of these, and any smaller civilian vehicles you might make in the future! |

hmmmmm wanna sell the rights to make some of these? ;)

Anytime Javelin
we must continue the spread of God's model and gaming scale – 6mm ! |

Yikes
printing the set in Frosted Ultra Detail priced out at $125. USD Frosted Detail came in at $75. USD I wish we had some cheaper alternative to Shapeways. Angel Barracks, if you want these, drop me a PM and we can figure something out! |

Nice set of design concepts, but would there be drivers in the future? The US Army have already said by 2024 few if any, transport vehicles should have human drivers and talking to a lorry driver recently, he guessed a similar timeframe (10-15 yrs) for commercial vehicles. Minor quibble, the light arrays are not very streamlined on the first tractor unit. |
UrbanWulf | 07 Jul 2014 3:10 p.m. PST |
Well they could be like the cars in The Fifth Element, where most of the time people are content to let them go on autonomous mode, but in some situations manual control is needed, so the cockpits remain useable by human pilots. |
SouthernPhantom | 08 Jul 2014 1:15 p.m. PST |
Milites, you also need to remember unloading. For many, if not all, deliveries (food, fuel, building materials and the like), the driver is required to unload small goods. Besides, the potential for hijacking and/or robbing an autonomous truck is concerning. Mostly the latter. |

I like the portrayal in lots of genres that invariably humans are a 'cheaper' option than tech
sometimes easier to maintain too! If the vehicle is automated it may still run with a loader or 'handler'
.. |

It always comes down to a guy swinging a hammer, as we say in the building business. People have been predicting the replacement of man by machine for centuries, but ultimately someone has to make the machine and keep it running. Buildings, too, for all their techiness in modern times, are still built by guys using the same tools as a century ago. I doubt we'll see auto trucks fully replacing driven vehicles any time soon except maybe on Mars or in nuclear wastelands. |

+1 on hoping these make it into production. |

Nice vehicles. And how much fun it is, after painting gobs of WW2 tanks, to be able to be imaginative with futuristic commercial vehicle paint schemes. "Nice set of design concepts, but would there be drivers in the future?" Ah, maybe you've forgotten the Schenectady Expressway pile-up of 2022, in which the 400+ casualties among the passengers led to Congress passing the Driver Reintroduction Law of 2023, since which time drivers have been mandatory on interstate expressways… |

"…in which the 400+ casualties among registered voters led to Congress passing the Driver Reintroduction Law of 2023…" Is this too jaded of me?? |

commanderroj, better ask Michael in the Angel Barracks forum. He can't respond here because Bill completely overreacted to a post that Michael made in a completely different forum and Bill banned Michael from TMP. |

Just an FYI, I sent the CAD file off last night to a prospective manufacturer, so we'll see if they can make these a reality! |
Covert Walrus | 21 Jul 2017 4:18 a.m. PST |
Another question, Javelin: Have you considered doing anything more with the Vektor Multirole armored vehicle? I'd be looking at something very like it in 6mm for my own forces – Particularly the Engineering. Artillery, and Command variants in particular. |
zircher | 21 Jul 2017 11:34 a.m. PST |
Are the rigs and trailers interchangeable? |
williamb | 23 Jul 2017 4:44 p.m. PST |
Great looking vehicles. Definitely would buy them. Hope they are available soon. |
javelin98 | 23 Jul 2017 8:46 p.m. PST |
@CW: Yeah, I'm going to be putting the Vektor up on Shapeways pretty soon. Stay tuned! @zircher: Yes, the trailers are all interchangeable. |
