This is a pretty unusual request, but I'm hoping one of you can help me.

The Ancient Warfare magazine ad on TMP has a painting that really gets my blood going: it looks like an assault by German tribesmen on a Roman palisade fort. Do any of you know if this painting is from a book (Osprey, etc.)? It doesn't happen to me too often, but that illustration makes me want to read whatever it came from!

If one of you could tell me what campaign it's supposed to illustrate I'd appreciate that as well. Ancients isn't my usual period…

Thank you for any help!

Is it one of these ones?

Not that Picture of Lindsay Powell.

Kidding aside.

I think the image in your head is of Jose's artwork of a Gaul assaulting the palisade while the Caesarian Romans are behind. There are some more Gaul's on the ground in the background.

I don't have the picture though…

I'll forward this to Mr. Kawarnasay…

Hi Achilles,

No, I'm afraid it's not, though I appreciate your trying! It's the picture that tends to appear on their banner ad here on TMP. It looks quite like the early minutes of Gladiator, though this time the tribesmen seem to be attacking a Roman fort, and the one tribesman visible is naked. Misty forests seem to loom in the background. It's all very atmospheric.

I was hoping someone would say, "Oh sure, that's a picture of ___________ from ___________", which might have been a little naive.

Thanks again for trying.

Sorry our posts overlapped, RelliK. I'm not sure who Jose Kawarnasay is, but we may be getting closer. Now I think of it, I think the tribesman depicted is a Gaul (unless the Germans fought naked also). Thanks for the help!

Hi Daryl
Ancient Warfare magazine has original artwork in every issue, and the full illustration that fragment came from can be found in AW issue VI.6: link

We also sell a print of that illustration: link

Mr. Kawarnasay,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. That's the one! I must say you picked a superb picture for your ad here, though in looking over the issues of your magazine it seems as though you have plenty to choose from. I'm very tempted to get that print, but need to think where I can put it! Hmmm…

I appreciate the help and apologise for mixing up your name in my post above.

You're welcome :-)

It looks like an Angus McBride, similar to those in the Osprey on Gauls and Brits.
