Guys,

PBS aired a nice documentary last night on the sinking of the Sultana steam boat shortly after the end of the American Civil War, which had been over-loaded with Union POWs heading home, and became the largest US maritime disaster up until Pearl Harbor. My great grandfather Daniel Garber, of the 102nd O.V.I. Rgt., Co. E, captured at Athens, and imprisoned at Cahaba, survived the Sultana tradegy.

I've heard Alan Huffman talk about the Sultana and its demise. This was a tragedy that should have never happened by greed and uncaring and inefficient oversight was too much in evidence.
