Hey all, I'm developing a set of rules for 20th century, modern and sci-fi small unit combat, and today we playtested some of the sci-fi element, with a scenario featuring Colonial Marines and xenomorphs. Pictures below.

The scenario set-up is simple—a squad of Marines, in two fire teams, plus two groups of colonial police, must try and escort a gaggle of civilians to a landing pad so that they can be evacuated from a colony overrun by aliens. The bugs, of course, want to eat the humans.

The Marines led the advance, with the cops bringing up the rear. The aliens attempted an early frontal assault against the human column, which was repulsed with heavy bug losses. Regrouping, the aliens attacked the humans from both the front and the rear—with deadly effect. Attrition wore down the Marines, and a few alien assaults destroyed the police. A desperate final dash to the landing pad was defeated by the aliens, who dismantled the Marine escort and then destroyed the civilians.

Good fun was had by both sides, and the system supported this kind of fight well. I have more modifications to make for the game to be suited to "bug hunts", but I ultimately hope to be able to game warfare from the birth of fire and maneuver infantry tactics in WWI, through WWII, the Cold War, the modern era, and into science fiction era.

Hopefully, by the end the year, the game will be developed
enough that I'll share it online for anyone interested (I figure I borrow too much from other systems for me to feel right about trying to sell the rules---so they'll be free instead!).

All models are by Khurasan (the Exterminators and Space Demon ranges, mainly). The mostly paper terrain is from a variety of sources, both from free sites and pay sites. The comms tower is built from one of those "platformer" sets.

It's not easy being a marine :)

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a close game.

I would strongly urge anyone developing a modern to sci-fi platoon level ruleset to take a close look at Too Fat Lardies' Chain Of Command rules, and please steal the "patrol phase" and "jump off point" mechanics.

panzersaurkrautwerfer28 Jun 2014 9:04 p.m. PST

Welp. Now I feel insecure about my space devils/exterminator paint jobs. Really nice looking models and game!

Still neat though. I'm working to build up enough scenery to do the same sort of scenerio (I went with some MFD stuff from Gamecraft though).

this looks really cool, is there a main source for your paper buildings? great paint jobs on the figure to, looking forward to your rules, will they be compatible with solo play?

corporalpat29 Jun 2014 6:54 a.m. PST

Looks really good. I love your bases!

Soldado29 Jun 2014 7:35 a.m. PST

Hi Grignotage, that looks like it was good fun.

Is that the zone 10 scenery you have there? if so did you have to scale the print outs at all? I ask because I've been looking at it but as it's labeled as 10mm I was unsure.

cant wait to see the finished rules.

Cyclopeus29 Jun 2014 8:23 a.m. PST

Very nice, that looks great.

Thanks for all the comments! They are much appreciated.

@Gunner Dunbar: Unfortunately, I can't remember the sources of all the paper buidlings…the favorite links were all on my old desk top, which isn't 100% operational. The rules will indeed be solo-friendly, as a third to half of my gaming is done solo. There are no core mechanics which require limited intel (no cards or mandatory hidden movement). I plan to add some special mechanics for game-controlled enemies, like zombies or bugs.

@Blooddave…I steal from so much else, might as well steal from TFL too! I've given those rules a reading, need to again.

@Soldado—They are Zone-10---it's been a while since I put these together, but I don't think I scaled them at all, just printed them as-is. They work fine for 15's.

Thanks again for the comments. I plan on posting a link to a PDF of my rules by fall or the end of the year, with more battle reports before then.

I recognize a couple of your paper terrain sources Grignotage, so I'll post links to those, so that anyone interested can check them out

both of these site's models are free and they are mainly 28mm, but you can reduce them to 15mm by printing them at 60% of original size.

Many thanks Grignotage and Maj Diz Aster

I knew I'd seen that landing pad somewhere

Awesome stuff now to print it at work :)

RTJEBADIA30 Jun 2014 5:46 a.m. PST

Beautiful models, too.

corporalpat30 Jun 2014 3:10 p.m. PST

Thanks loads Maj Diz! I have the Toposolitario stuff but had not seen Genetmodels. Now I gotta get busy!

Just took a closer look at some of those Genet Models pieces. They look outstanding! Great directions, multiple variants of each model, and what looks to be some relatively easy to assemble items! Thanks again Diz!
