Curious, has anyone tried playing with 6mm micro armor on Squad Leader game boards, with say using Force on Force rules? I normally play 15mm/28mm but I don't want to spend another fortune and a lot of time with making up terrain for yet another scale. I thought that using Squad Leader boards might be an option for 6mm. Thoughts? |

Squad Leader scenarios work well for company level games, especially with micro armor. But I have never thought about using the SL hex boards. I can tell you 6mm is a lot cheaper and easier to amass a sizable force. |

Deluxe ASL was specifically designed to use micro armor on the boards. |

I don't play FOF, but I do play 6mm micro armour. I started out using the Squad Leader (and Panzer Leader) boards to play on and still do occasionally. While the board artwork is pretty nice, I still prefer to add lichen/clump foliage, paper buildings (free downloads) and flat hills made from corrugated cardboard or scrap styrofoam. The Deluxe ASL boards are really good for small unit actions, especially the urban boards. Minimum cost/mimimum fuss. Maximum fun. cheers |

6mm tank on a SL board looks a bit cramped. 1/600 is a better fit. |

Yes and no. The true ground scale for SL is approx 1:1800. The ground scale for DSL is approx 1:700. I have tried (a long time back) the 1/700 vehicles from the japanese model companies, but gave up due to the lack of choice available at the time, and the lack of something to represent infantry. I don't have a problem with selective compression of ground scale to figure scale, nor do I play the rules "as written" (you need to make allowances for the size of the minis in use). At any rate, it's far more visually appealing using 1/285 minis on three or four mapboard sections than having a dozen 28mm tanks on a 5x8 foot table. YMMV cheers |

I used to play Imperial Commander on SL boards, I made up counters for it
. the hexes are really quite small. |

Horses for courses Martin. The hexes for SL (as well as PB/PL) are 25/32 inch by my measure and are adequate (if only just) for the majority of ww2 6mm kit (which is what I mostly play). The larger stuff overhangs the hexes. As a reasonably effective solution to this I downloaded the map sections from the Imaginative Strategist site link . When printed in quarters at maximum enlargement I ended up with hexes 17/16 inches in diameter. But all this presupposes that the hex grid is required for play. Many, if not most, of the games I play on these surfaces aren't hex based. Measurements for range and movement are in inches. To me these mapboards are just good looking playing surfaces that happen to have a hex grid superimposed on them. Certainly they are (IMO) better looking than a grass mat with bits of coloured felt and masking tape, especially with some 3D terrain bits added (primarily to aid in LOS determination). cheers |
