While looking for information on Jack Kirby, I found out that he had done design work for Thundarr the Barbarian

picture

I was wondering how many people had tried gaming something like it; there is no shortage of science fantasy stories with similar elements. Anything from a Dungeons & Dragons style game rationalized as super-technology to a straightforward post-apocalyptic world with a few "weird" mutant abilities would fit. At any rate, I have fond memories of the show. Please let me know what you think.

Check out Savage Afterworld:
savageafterworld.blogspot.com

He has an RPG supplement for Mutant Future (a Gamma World alike). It's listed in the sidebar, and he has made adventures available on the blog.

For some reason Old Glory has a 15mm Ookla with their supersystem minis.

I love thundarr. I thought ookla, aerial, and thundarr were all in that set?

They are:

If you're fond of Thundarr, Kirby's Kamandi series is pretty much mandatory reading as well, maybe with some Devil Dinosaur as a chaser.

I have complete runs of Kamandi and Devil Dinosaur stashed away in the attic. I might have to have a marathon re-read this summer.

It all makes sense now. Kirby….

A world where gun-toting leopard-men evolved from regular leopards? It's a madhouse! A madhouse!

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian27 Jun 2014 3:16 a.m. PST

It's weirder than that. They're gun-toting leopard-men pirates who work for Sacker's Department Store, which is, of course, owned by a giant boa constrictor. That particular issue has them invading what's left of Canada, which is home to a plethora of giant insects and is being defended by evolved British bulldogs from NATO.

Really.

Thundarr seems kind of tame by comparison.

I'm really surprised no one has been able to capture Kirby's style in miniature. I would guess if someone could they would sell well.

Many of the Superfigs models from Old Glory/Four Color Figures are distinctly Kirby-esque, especially the Alien Host sub-range.

CommanderCarnage27 Jun 2014 6:51 a.m. PST

True, I had forgotten about those.

Too right! I'm seriously intrigued.

Wait- does Kamandi have a stretchy, talking dog buddy?

Absolutely, I noticed that the first time I laid eyes on those minis. They're on my "one of these days" list, and I plan to paint them in appropriately four-color Kirby-esque color schemes.

How cool would a range of Kirby-inspired anthropomorhic animals be?

And I still think of Klik-Klak whenever I see a grasshopper or hear a cicada.

Does this help?

Sadly, Kirby left the series before we got to see the Orangutan Surfing Civilization, Communi-Bear Silo States, or the Mao-Tse-Tigers.

Stretchy, no. Talking and dog, yes. Meet Doctor Canus:

Seems to me that I've seen several calls for such over the years, but there still aren't many decent options. Zombiesmith has some good 15mm Nazi pig-men hidden on his site, and the Ar-men from Black Hat's Cobalt-1 range are okay as 28mm dog/coyote/wolf men. There are a couple of different apes-in-boiler-suit ranges that would do, but sadly no Romanesque tiger-men to go with them.

Ah, the Knights of Wundagore. Another nice one.

Until not-Thundarr and friends are released in 28mm-ish, this weapon swap worked reasonably well.
