South Florida Miniatures Gamers will run our annual ACW Weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday. Up this year is the Battle of Chickamauga. I have chosen the second day scenario from the classic Fire & Fury Great Western Battles Scenario Book. I built the board a little larger, just because I wanted to include Lee & Gordon's Mill. I went 6 X 12 feet in order to do so. I will use my 10mm Cracker Line and Plank Road figures, Between the Lines Models and my own custom terrain. We will have approximately 12 players. I will provide an AAR, but for now, here are some teaser shots of the calm before the storm. I also plan to run the game at Historicon.

Looks great! I used to make custom boards for all my games, and I really miss having the space to do so now.

Fantastic! Can you say more about the terrain? What's it made of? How'd you make it?

ACWBill27 Jun 2014 3:52 a.m. PST

Cheap white foam from Home Depot is the starter. I use hot wire foam cutting tools and interior latex paint. The board gets a thorough coating with a mix of glue and sand after initial carving in order to make the cheap cellular foam tougher. The cheaper the foam, the easier it is to work. One can always toughen it up later.

Bill,

As always, it looks amazing. I'm looking forward to your game this weekend! I'm sure we will have a blast.

Cheers,

BILL – You should refer Bede19025 to the terrain article you wrote for WARGAMERS ILLUSTRATED. I would, but forgot the issue number.

You must have one of those fancy foam cutter table saws to get those straight lines…

Bede, there is an article in WI 302 that describes my process in a step by step fashion. Sorry about the earlier message as it was the wrong article. The sections of the foam are pre-cut rectangular pieces of a 4ft. x 14.5" size. I cut the length in half to prevent warping. I then start detailing with my hot wire foam cutting devices.

Nice work Bill! I expect we'll see lots more photos of this game in WI. Congrats on the Vicksburg issue! Hoping to get down to Historicon 2015 to see one of these games in person.

Great Bryan, look forward to meeting you in person after all these years of talking on the web. Thanks for all the kind words and I hope to see you next summer in Fredericksburg.

Thanks. I will look for the article

Realistically, all you'd be able to see were the trees.

ACWBill12 Jul 2014 4:29 a.m. PST

This was simulated by making all of the dark green area wooded, with a 2" line of site. The only open areas are the fields, represented by standing corn or the light tan flocking. Se my other thread with the AAR to see the progress of the scenario.

Bill,

To say your games are most impressive is an unbelievable understatement! They must be experienced in person!
