I am wondering if anyone can recommend space opera style RPG that has been released in the last 2-5 years? I am not interested in Star Wars. David P. |

There's a boardgame called Battlestations that aims to recreate Star Trek-like clasic Space Operas, with each character representing a role like engineer, comms officer, navigator, physician, and so on, and then engaging in adventures where they interact, and often fight, aboard their own or the enemy's vessel. I think it required a GM and there are lots of supplements. Even though it comes in a box and has cardboard tiles for the ship sections and counters for the characters, it is more like a RPG with some boardgame mechanics. link |

I would also recommend SWN. Very good RPG. |

I've not played, but I've read good things about SWN. Xin |

I've not tried it, but there is a bundle for Traveller 2300 up for sale right now. link |

Savage Worlds Slipstream: link Wonderful pulp-era space opera with an excellent game engine behind it. |

Probably pushing past the 5 year cutoff but GURPS had a Pulp Space Opera background released called something like "Tales of the Space Patrol". Good old fifties style space opera. |

I'd also add my voice to both savage worlds as well as stars without number. SWN is more of a d20 based system (without feats) that has a skill system very traveller esque. One of the coolest things about the book (IMO) is the planet/sector/faction generation tools for sandbox gaming. Savage worlds works very well for playing with figs on a table if that's your thing (I've seen it used for wargaming conventions as well). There are 4 traits, exploding dice, fairly pulpy damage (getting shaken first, which you roll to throw off), rerolls from bennies, and heaps of advantages and hindrances. Very fun and easy to play. |

2300AD, whilst a fine game, is not space opera – it's very hard science. However, the Bundle of holding does include the Mongoose Traveller Core rulebook, which does have more of a space opera feel. I'd second Savage Worlds, with the Scifi toolkit it's great resource and is a fast and flexible system. G. |

Probably pushing past the 5 year cutoff but GURPS had a Pulp Space Opera background released called something like "Tales of the Space Patrol". Good old fifties style space opera. They also had an actual licensed Lensmen sourcebook, if you want to do the setting that really defines space opera as a genre for most people. Long OOP and much older than 5 years, though. You could probably find used copies or a pdf without too much trouble or expense. link |

Diaspora tends towards hard(ish) sci-fi (but still Traveller enough to be good, in my book), but being FATE-based it's very adaptable in tone. |

The Traveller T5 rulebook is now being sold separately, so is worth considering, especially if it has a better index than their 500+ page kickstarter release. Space Opera is back in print, as a PDF. FUBAR has a very light RPG, available for free. Pairing Traveller, and/or some of the others with the Mythic system would be a great idea (Mythic offers a RPG too). I've heard good things about SWN, but can't comment on it, since I've never seen it. |

Thank you for the suggestions, I have heard of an RPG called Starblazer and I am wondering how that game is? Davud P.

Starblazer: Only one I know of by that name was released by Metagaming shortly before they went out of business. That particular one was "The Fantasy Trip" system modified for SciFi adventures. Hard to find and not worth the effort. I'm guessing that is not the one you are referring to though. |
Katwerks | 25 Jun 2014 6:27 a.m. PST |
No the version that referring to came out about several years ago by Cubicle 7. |

Yes, I think the Starblazer RPG you're thinking about is the Cubicle 7 one. Excellent for space opera stuff and wonderfully illustrated. But, it's a beast of a book. Essentially it's the FATE engine that's been massively (and completely unecessarily) padded out. Just grab yourself a copy a FATE instead. Or even better, 'FATE accelerated'. Ian |

GURPS Traveller, Interstellar Wars is pretty good, though I'd alter the tone so it would be more like they're encountering the Imperium from Dune. Alternately there's GURPS Vorkosigan, which is a complete game in one book covering the popular Lois McMaster Bujold novels. |

Savage Worlds all the way Especially with the release of the SF Companion. Then there is Traveller, Lot of play left in the old system, Mongoose has done a credible job with it. Avoid T5 until the Starter set appears, as the current rule book needs an advanced degree in Traveller to use… |
