Looks like Morgan Freeman is scheduled to cover that this week
In an actual scientific context! link link Dan PS. "Zombies" of the behavior-altered infected but living types. Not the undead or voodoo control types. |

Sometimes I think that people are like living dead not all but most . |

If you ask me, the epidemic has already begun, and cats are the primary medium for infection: "Effect Of Toxoplasma On Human Behavior Although latent infection with Toxoplasma gondii is among the most prevalent of human infections, it has been generally assumed that, except for congenital transmission, it is asymptomatic. The demonstration that latent Toxoplasma infections can alter behavior in rodents has led to a reconsideration of this assumption. When infected human adults were compared with uninfected adults on personality questionnaires or on a panel of behavioral tests, several differences were found. Other studies have demonstrated reduced psychomotor performance in affected individuals. Possible mechanisms by which T. gondii may affect human behavior include its effect on dopamine and on testosterone." link Dan |

I could hang out long enough for all the other creatures (carnivores, insects) to settle things down, so bring it on. |

Probably not, for the same reason human civilization in New England isn't destroyed by hordes of rabid racoons in the spring. Nothing that spreads by biting, even if it's a 100% transmission rate (which no real disease will ever have), will spread fast enough to overwhelm the healthy population. It would have to be airborne to spread that fast (and that would be legitimately terrifying), but then you don't really have a classic 'Zombie' scenario as we see in popular media. -Will |

Global warming causes zombies. Why not? It gets blamed for everything else. |

Of course. Everyone knows that most zombies come from the tropics! Dan |

You should be here. In the next 90 days the Zombie outbreak has started. Already they have been nestling amongst us. Slowly and "subtle" at first. But as we get closer to the General Election, you see more and more of them hosting TV news shows and roaming the streets in search of brains, uttering inane utterings. And in about 60 days time virtually the whole country will be infected as neighbour turns on neighbour, family on family. Some will willingly embrace it, some will have it thrust upon them. |

About the "zombie" part: link Now about the "apocalypse" part: link Therefore, zombies should not be used as an apocalyptic force in fiction (see: Dylan Dog, Skullduggery Pleasant, the Dresden Files, D&D) any more than most other monsters. Possibly not even Russo zombies, but Romero zombies certainly have serious problems with trying to cause an apocalypse. |

The speed of infection isn't so much the issue as the people involved understanding what the infection is. They don't understand that it causes the dead to come back from life so they don't quarantine the bodies before they turn properly, bitten people are usually not that bad at first and just told to take meds and lie down, not knowing they will turn in a relativey short while, relatives don't understand why their loved ones are eating the kids, and those that get half an idea of what's happened still believe that the dead person is I'll and will come back so they protect the zed in a shed or cellar, therefore prolonging the need for infection containment time, etc etc, never mind the learning curve of 'shoot in the head to make 100% dead' so in its own way it does spread quickly due to ignorance. However I am now very knowledgeable on the matter so will know that the drooling fool staggering towards me is a corpse and not a drunk from last night's party
I'm with the Freeman

The basic criteria as laid out in the OP is that it's a ' "Zombies" of the behavior-altered infected but living types. Not the undead' scenario. So no corpses springing back to life, no 'have to shoot them in the head', none of that living-dead crap. -Will |
