Is it possible to play CoC or BA in 28mm ont his table.
or should i go to 20mm?

Richard Humm20 Jun 2014 8:12 a.m. PST

You should be all right with Chain of Command, as that's about the size the Lardies were using for their 28 mm game at Salute. I've not played Bolt Action, so I can't comment on that.

I've played CoC on a much smaller table than that. Unless you are going to change the ground scale then there is no difference between using 20mm or 28mm figures.

You can easily play both on a 4x4 table.

8 X 4 is what I have it works fine. I use a lot of trees and or buildings, making max line of sight to 24" or less. some times there is a open line 4' long but they are death traps for any rules set.

Yes, okay size for both games.

Rrobbyrobot20 Jun 2014 8:59 a.m. PST

Plenty big for BA. Haven't played CoC yet.

4 x 8 is plenty big enough for most 28 mm WW II games unless you are trying a particularly large scenario. What constitutes a large scenario? Well that depends on the theater of operations and what forces are involved. Sometimes you just have to go with judgement calls and leave at that.

We usually play our "full size" 1000 pts Bolt Action games on a 4x6. If we are only going with a really skirmish size at 400-500 pts we even occasionally shrink it down to a 4x4. Add in suitably dense terrain and you get a good game. We haven't tried CoC yet, but I have heard good things here.

I use a 4x6 and it works fine------ for me!! I don't have or use a lot of figures to game with as I play a lot of solo games and tend to use small units in every period I game.

I'm with Wargamer & pretty much everyone else,(though no solo games) all of our games are on the "skirmish" side, although sometimes, like in our TSATF games, there are quite a few figs out there! We usually play those on an 8x6. No problems with either set that we've come across at all.

I have a 5x10 footer, and have yet to find the rules that will not work! That includes 15mm skirmish using games designed for a 3x3' or so, including MDRG, SBH etc. from Ganesha Games! It's all in the scenario design folks. Played BA on a big 6x10'? table and it worked great.

Thanks for the answers.

Do I understand it correct (from major B's message) that it doen't matter if you use 20 mm or 28mm as the distances are still the same?

Surferdude01 Jul 2014 11:51 a.m. PST

Just don't try and play the scenarios for BA on that large a table in 6 turns like they say. Otherwise works well and gives the heavier weapons the advantage they should have as they can outrange other weapons.

uglyfatbloke02 Jul 2014 2:42 a.m. PST

We use 10.4 for Bolt Action pretty regularly but you have to adjust the number of turns for a scenario if you lay down the table rather than across it. We've scrapped ranges for Bolt Action other than for pistols and flame-throwers which we've found works well; that said, we do put rather a lot of terrain/cover on the board so there's seldom a LoS of more than perhaps 20 inches or so.
