Some of my best memories of RPGing was an old Judge Dredd RPG from the early 90's? Brilliant detective gaming with an all action fantasy world full of strange characters and critters
(I have often thought that as popular as it is I still consider it as an undiscovered gem
the setting and narrative is so good
I read a lot of fiction and comics when I was young and Judge Dredd was probably my all time favourite ) I'm aware of the new Mongoose/Warlord skirmish rules but I'm really interested in rule playing the Judges. While I could manage rule playing without "rules" I'm wondering could the present rules support RPGing or is there any reference to Roleplaying
Lastly do anyone role-play the Judge Dredd world? Love to know what rules
I've got kids nearing the age of roleplaying so I'm seriously thinking of taking the plunge once again

Do you mean the old Games Workshop Judge Dredd game? I used that a few times but usually used Champions/Hero system. I would kill to get a game of that going again – but you really need people who have read the comics and understand the milieu. I have been reading JD since it first came out. Still do. |

Mongoose do an RPG of Dredd, as well as their miniatures game. It uses the Mongoose version of Traveller as its system. link I haven't played the Dredd one, but I've played the Strontium Dog RPG and the Hammer's Slammers RPG which both use the same Mongoose Traveller rules and they were both fine. |

Games Workshop
thats right
Honestly Brian they were the best games I've ever played
I had 7,8 of my football pals playing
guys with absolute no interest in Roleplaying
I sucked them in by a couple of murder mystery type stories and expanded their interest with high action fire fights
in the end most of them were reading the comics
I'd play at the drop of a hat too if I could
I haven't read the comics in a long time now but maybe its time to put that right
What is the quality like of the comics nowadays? |

The old GW game was based off Warhammer FRP (loosely) and worked really well, but probably hard to find nowadays. The Mongoose game is based off Traveller and works very well too. Since it's really just a setting without a lot of stuff to it (it's all about the attitude and the things you do, rather than the gear and gadgets) you could probably do it just fine in GURPS, BRP or most any other generic game on the market. I've thought of a "dark heresy meets judge dredd" RPG idea for a long time, but it's still a year off, at least. |

Okay Stonty Girl thanks for that
I didn't realize there was a RPG as well
I think I could probably mae without one but it would help nicely with scenario creation
much obliged for the info ;) |
War Panda | 18 Jun 2014 12:07 p.m. PST |
Okay thanks Weasel good to know
would you recommend a particular sci-fi system yourself? |

i started role playing in 1977. gw's judge dredd was the last one i gm'ed. loved it. i look back on all the different rpg's i ran
wish i could get the gang back togeather and play. |

I have absolutely no background in Judge Dredd. I never even saw the movie, which I understand is horrible. How well could someone play the game with no background knowledge at all? |
Weasel | 18 Jun 2014 1:24 p.m. PST |
John – The new movie is really good. Just a straight up future action romp. The original one is terrible. War Panda – For simplicity of getting the game, I'd probably just grab Mongoose's version. I believe you need a copy of Traveller as well, but that's a mighty fine game in itself. If I was going to run it, I'd probably use BRP (the system that powered games like Runequest and Call of Cthulhu). |

Thanks Weasel I'll look into those
I'm determined to take the plunge this time
John
as Brian mentioned earlier it would help a lot to appreciate the whole depth of the world and it would be difficult to GM a game without any previous knowledge. But when I GM'd a bunch who knew nothing of the comics (no movies then) I started with the simple premise of a ruthless totalitarian zero tolerance police force (you know like the RCMP ;) ) and I used a NPC Judge accompanying the PC's to gave them examples of using the various weapons available "lawgiver's settings
ricochet bullets, heat seekers, hi-ex etc etc
" "LawMaster Bike" I used a real basic murder detective type scenario that slowly immersed them into the world without needing a lot of background info BTW the latest movie while lacking a lot of the normal Hollywood big effects was excellent. Personally I did not like the Stallone on at all

My big game was a high adventure set around the time of Block War and the Apocalypse War and it's aftermath. I have a 'comic style' write up of one of the adventures I ran that I should post. I am not a very good artist but it was quite cool, none the less. When I get home I will dig it out and scan it. OFM – The good thing is that all the Dredd comic stories have been released as compilation books. I also have a lot of the compilation of eight frame strips that appeared in the Daily Mirror back in the 80s/90s. |

Brian we need to see that AAR :)
I've being making a few comic style WW2 AAR's recently so I'd love to try that out when I do start

My one was done as a drawing – no miniatures were harmed in it's production. |
War Panda | 18 Jun 2014 2:50 p.m. PST |
"no miniatures were harmed in it's production" We won't hold that against you
as long as it's good ;) |
Weasel | 18 Jun 2014 3:08 p.m. PST |
If you don't know the setting, just start with a generic cyberpunk overpopulated city setting and tell the players to act the way Hollywood thinks Soviet police acted. |
Brian Smaller | 18 Jun 2014 4:44 p.m. PST |
And a handout of crimes and punishments. They are not all death sentences, even in MC1. |
Weasel | 18 Jun 2014 6:12 p.m. PST |
On that note, you can't gun down everybody :) Applying the punishment to the wrong person is not acceptable either. |
Ping Pong | 18 Jun 2014 6:17 p.m. PST |
Most weren't death sentences. Life in the ISO cubes probably. ;) |
Ethanjt21 | 19 Jun 2014 5:14 a.m. PST |
You could use cyberpunk set in a JD world fairly easily. I used to play a lot of Cyberpunk. |

My old RPG group started playing Shadowrun, which I've never much cared for
but it got me jonesing for a Max Headroom/Judge Dredd sort of game. I've got the old GW stuff and a similar game called Underground
but I do think if I actually run it I'd use BRP with bits of the Superworld rules. |
Weasel | 19 Jun 2014 9:36 a.m. PST |
Oh goodness, Max headroom :) 80s awesome overload! |
john lacour | 19 Jun 2014 10:35 a.m. PST |
the underground. thats a fun, super violent game. |
