IF this had been done for 15mm, this set up would definitely be my pick:
link Even so, it helps to demonstrate what I'm looking for
DIY desert buildings with a little more than just the usual rectangular box look. QUESTION: Anyway, what's your favorite example of SF desert buildings done FROM SCRATCH specifically for 15mm gaming? Thanks, Dan |

If you ask me
I think that, for multi-angular structures, everything should start with the roof, then you can trace the form on the board and know where to put your walls, right? Thoughts??? This fella did these for 15mm, and it is indeed multi-angular like I want to make mine, though the final product wasn't meant to be a desert building setup:

Wow! those are great thanks CC for the post. I have to wait for the move before I can start on anything like that. CC I would think your right, start with the roofs to get the walls layout |
MrHarold | 16 Jun 2014 9:52 p.m. PST |
That's a good way to do it
. I wondering about that! |

Great buildings! Hmmmm, I need a Post Apocalypse style compound soon
and an Afghan village
and an addition to my Mos Eisley layout
and
This is how I would do it
start with the roof, trace it to make the building footprint, then build walls from there. BTW, I do all my buildings to about 1/72 scale so they can work for 15-25mm adequately. Base on wood, paint with glue and sand mixed in. These would take no time to make. Even less if you use hot glue for much of the construction. I would make the bases smaller and with square angles so as to fit together better. OK, I'm off to the workshop! I'll try to post some photos. Thanks for the find. |

I can't say how much I like those buildings. They are really, really nice and I will bear them in mind when I next make some more structures. John T |

I am inspired by these buildings. I might have to try my hand at a few of these when I finish up some of my current projects. |

Any other attempts at making something other than square or rectangular buildings? Dan |

I once created dome houses using cheap polystyrene bowls. |

The bottom end of fizzy drinks bottles can be used to make temporary type structures like refugee or nomads tents, partially melt them and they would be in the process of putting them up or down. added bonus they come in all sorts of interesting shapes and sizes. link |
War Monkey | 14 Jul 2014 5:10 a.m. PST |
Soldado Those look really nice, they gave me an idea! If you cover them in tissue paper they would work for some really cool sci fi tents! : D |

Someone recently asked where they could order "cheap"* foam core already cut into smaller sections. Can't recall who or in which thread at the moment. Anyway, here's one option: link Dan * I guess that depends on volume bought and shipping – might not work for everyone obviously |

I made this out of a CD tower. link |
War Monkey | 19 Jul 2014 1:57 p.m. PST |
Just thought or an idea, what if you used a 1 foot size hexagon to base your sci-fi buildings on, the combination of layouts would be rather large then, wouldn't it? |

I is confuserated. That doesn't look at all like San Francisco and there's no desert very close to that city. What gives? |

Any other attempts at making something other than square or rectangular buildings? Not in 15mm, but this guy built an epic centerpiece for an Infinity table. Thread is here: link
I believe the model is roughly 1/200 scale, with 28mm doors and other details added. It's a model of the National Museum of the American Indian. |

Lion, that is absolutely stunning!!! War Monkey, check out what big foam hexes could end up looking like: link Dan |

Dan Do those buildings from Data Sphere remind you of those Martian terrain pictures, the ones with all the buildings along the canyon walls. There are so many great ideas here I had to run out and get a note book to start writing down notes and ideas. |
War Monkey | 04 Aug 2014 11:36 a.m. PST |
Dan Those hex platforms would make for great alien city or ruins! Another note for the note book! |

War Monkey, Look up hexagon cake dummies too, though they will probably be made from the white "beaded" packing-type expanded polystyrene foam. Dan |
War Monkey | 05 Aug 2014 8:27 a.m. PST |
Dan I would go with the pink foam, and then barrow the wife's hexagonal guilting template (wonderful tool) and then just go from there. |

Wondering if I could use "Drywall Shims" for walls and such they are 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide made of cardboard material about 9 US Dollars for a bundle of about 50, sure would save on eating a lot of cereal!
One pack could last a live time! plus I think they would work for 15 and 28 range Could glue them in layers to make them stronger like the one guy did. |
J Womack 94 | 06 Aug 2014 5:49 a.m. PST |
War Monkey, at 1.5 inches wide, assuming you used them on their sides for walls, you would have a roughly 37mm wall height. That's plenty for 15mm, but maybe a bit low for 28mm figures. Still, a great idea. |

OMG. I had been looking for pre-cut card or cork strips for quite some time. Very, very nice! Do you find it locally, or do you have to order online? Dan |
War Monkey | 06 Aug 2014 7:44 a.m. PST |
You can get them off the shelves, at any of the big box home improvement places, or if you wished I think you could just order them online as well |
Cacique Caribe | 06 Aug 2014 6:34 p.m. PST |
Off the shelf works for me! Thanks, Dan |
War Monkey | 06 Aug 2014 9:32 p.m. PST |
You should be able to find them in the "dry wall" section, if not ask someone working in the building material section, I don't think most other workers would know what they are! |
