Prompted by the discussion here : TMP link So, we're talking figures who are gratuitously nude or just running around in thongs/bikinis/nick-nacks/whatchamcallits etc. We're not talking about "historical" amazons (if that's not an oxymoron) or accurately portrayed civilans of ancient times / colonial times / New York Times. In the discussion the suggestion came up that these figures sell well, and that's why they get made. If true a lot of people would have quite a few of them so do you have : A) None B) One C) 2-5 D) 6-25 E) 26-50 F) 50-100 G) More than 100 H) None – but you could ask me about my collection of manly pinup figures

A) None.* Of course, it's possible that the market that they sell to is not made up of TMP members. *On the assumption that the 25mm naked Galatians aren't gratuitous, so I am not obliged to say (H)! |

I have an awful lot of Gallic types without any trousers on, which I suppose might be pinups for some people. |

I would argue that for a Sword & Sorcery style game such figures would "Setting Appropriate"! |

I think the naked Gauls fall into the historical category (even if I personally have doubts that they are all that historical
.). Having thought about it I think I'm a D (6-25): I bought almost every figure in the VFW range, so that included a number of naked women. I'm not going to defend them on the grounds of being inspire by Bosch. I think I have a couple from Ral Partha and Grenidier D&D figure sets. |
altfritz | 13 Jun 2014 9:23 a.m. PST |
I'm pretty sure there is at least one credible historical reference for the Gauls. |

I was gonna say none. Then I remembered my old D&D collection. So I'd say somewhere around 20. |

Not at tall sure. I have a lot of female figures in fantasy armies and it would take some time to go through them trying to judge which side of the line of girly pinup they lie. The potential for over 100 is defiantly there (my Dark Temple army >200 females) but where do you judge half woman half something else. I'm not going to try to categorise them but >25 with no idea of the actual number. x42 |

Wait
does this also include the Ral-Parta slave girl set I got about 15 years ago?
if so, then I would put it around
.ummm
. Probably D
with an approx count of about 10 or so

Unless you count the Indian "Maiden" guard I had in the Indian army I sold, none. Hardly pinup material, though. The mugs on those broads could stop a clock. |

I don't know if they are "pin-up". I guess true pin-ups would be 3. I use them as sorority girls in my zombie games. Armed female characters, ie: Hasselfree and RAFM, about 25. I've got the 5 from "Sucker Punch" and a bunch of western figures also. Not true pin up as they are all very well armed. I would like to get the Witch figure for my horror games, who makes it? |

C). I think as they appear to be cavegirls prolly copplestone . Others they may or may not qualify are a cauldron of blood and small unit of witch elves. Have not purposely sought nudish models as these are for games only but just seem more saucy than most. |

A or D A – None, because the scantily clad women I have are appropriately dressed for their genre. I have some postapoc female gangers in "painted on" jeans (heh heh), but that's really just a lack of desire to sculpt over the spandex clad 'Clix base figures. Plus, they started out more scantily clad than when I finished with them. D – I do have a squad (13) of 1950's cheescake silver bikini spacewomen. Appropriate for the genre, but the genre is pretty much cheesecakey, so
I have a lumberjack figure, converted from one of Bob Murch's Pulp Figures, who cuts down trees, skips and jumps, and likes to press wild flowers. Kinda girly, but not much of a pinup

Currently, I own none, though I admit to thinking that some of the scantily clad women warriors from Hasslefree are beautifully done, and would be a lot of fun to paint. I'm thinking of buying some of the Copplestone 15mm fantasy packs in which there are barely clothed women in the tradition of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. Should I be feeling guilty? I don't really understand why some posters on TMP are so obsessed with the fact that nude female figures are produced and sold. Its a probably a very niche market, and frankly, it would take a great deal more skill with a brush than most of us have to make them even remotely sexy. Not everyone comes from the same life circumstances. I'm in the proximity of attractive young women quite a lot. Knowing them and interacting with them is satisfying enough for me. However, I think that not everyone has the opportunity for relationships with women . . . on any level. Perhaps for a small minority, the figures are a sort of fantasy release or comfort? I'm not trying to be crude. I'm thinking of a documentary I saw about online gaming in which a paraplegic was interviewed. In real life he was isolated and lonely. In Second Life he could run and swim and chat with people. What's the harm being done with these figures? Another thought is that many TMPers praise and buy the production of figures that glorify violence against women and torture. An example is the new Eureka Guillotine set, which is beautifully and accurately sculpted and cast. The figure of the female victim is horrifying, in a very historical way. Not my cup of tea, but maybe someone, somewhere, is planning a Scarlet Pimpernel game. We've all seen figures being impaled, or carried off by vikings to be raped and enslaved. Those viking captor and captive figures are not my fave sculpts, but I understand that for the person buying and painting them, they are a necessary element of history. However, I can see why a woman might be offended by them. Why are so many WWII gamers eager to be the Waffen SS? We all know what happens when they take that village. There are those who understand the circumstances who might be offended. Why do we ignore the horrific violence but become so puritanical about someone else viewing or buying a 28mm nude female? Sex is good. Violence is not. If producers want to make nude figures, and there are people who want to buy and paint them, how does that affect the price of tea in China? |
OSchmidt | 05 Aug 2014 12:21 p.m. PST |
At recollection I have I'm not going to list the 25mm GW Amazons or Ral partha or any of the others in the table top army,I assume you mean figures showing significant areas of pulchritude and nudity. 12 fully painted. Varioous avocations (French Maid, Stripper, Cheerleader, Milkmaid, ancient Queen, Page 3 girl, Lingerie models, etc. About another dozen in various stages of painting and conversion. By the way NOT ONE of them has an oversized weapon, absurd armor or some sort of abomination (tail, lions head etc, and not ONE of them is in any sort of uniform. Pin-ups. All of them are either Essex figures (80mm) or Midnight Mascot Figures. I agree with Wulgar. Sex is good, violence is not. I pride myself on my Uxoriousness. (look it up) |

Do these kind count or not? TMP link If not, It will still be G I guess. Among them a lot of 28mm (Eureka, Shadowforge, Maidenhead, Hasslefree and some others), but also nearly the whole Tim Richards collection (Mascot Models), some Andrea's and also 1/8 to 1/4 garage kits. Have to admit that on most of them I even have not started. But I also have a very huge pile of historical ranges (painted and unpainted). So although it is G for me, that does not support the suggestion that pin up style mini's sell well, because my other pile is way bigger. |
