"Many of history's most celebrated military commanders achieved immortality after perishing in battle. Consider Horatio Nelson, James Wolfe, Stonewall Jackson and George Armstrong Custer. And let's not forget leaders like Arthur Wellesley, Charles De Gaulle, Dwight Eisenhower and Ulysses Grant who graduated from war to conquer the world of politics. Then strangely enough there were the others: generals who covered themselves in glory on the battlefield only to disappear into ignoble obscurity in peacetime. Douglas MacArthur once remarked that old soldiers never die, "they just fade away." Perhaps he was thinking about commanders such as these when he said it…"
